Irish toasts

As Irish alcohol is also something I enjoy, I just HAVE to include some toasts… But my Guinness you can’t have!

There are many good reasons for drinking,
One has just entered my head.
If a man doesn't drink when he's living,
How in the hell can he drink when he's dead?

Here's to me, and here's to you,
And here's to love and laughter-
I'll be true as long as you,
And not one moment after.

When we drink, we get drunk.
When we get drunk, we fall asleep.
When we fall asleep, we commit no sin.
When we commit no sin, we go to heaven.
So, let's all get drunk, and go to heaven!

Here's to a long life and a merry one.
A quick death and an easy one.
A pretty girl and an honest one.
A cold beer—and another one!

May the lilt of Irish laughter lighten every load,
May the mist of Irish magic shorten every road,
May you taste the sweetest pleasures that fortune ere bestowed,
And may all your friends remember all the favours you are owed.

Let us drink to our enemies’ enemies!

May the enemies of Ireland find no friends.

A healthy heart and a wet mouth!
(In Gaelic:
Croi follain agus gob fliuch.)

Health to the men and may the women live forever.
(In Gaelic:
Sláinte chuig na fír, agus go mairfidh na mna go deo.)

If you cheat, may you cheat death.
If you steal, may you steal a woman's heart.
If you fight, may you fight for a brother.
And if you drink, may you drink with me.
(In Gaelic:
Seo sláinte an tséitéara, an ghadaí, an trodaí, agus an óltóra!
Má dhéanann tu séitéireacht, go ndéana tú séitéireacht ar an mbás,
Má ghoideann tú, go ngoide tú croí mná;
Má throideann tú, go dtroide tú i leith do bhráthar,
Agus má ólann tú, go n-óla tú liom féin.)

Health for life to you,
A wife of your choice to you,
Land without rent to you,
A child every year to you,
And the light of heaven
after this world for you.
(In Gaelic:
Sláinte go saol agat,
Bean ar do mhian agat.
Leanbh gach blían agat,
is solas na bhflaitheas
tareis antsail seo agat.)

Last but not least, the Gaelic phrases for the different levels of drunkenness:
Tipsy – súgach
Drunk - ar meisce
Wildly drunk – ar deargmheisce
Blind drunk - caoch ólta
On the floor - ar an lár

-carina
