In 1997, the BPR series expanded and fell under the auspices of the FIA (becoming known as the FIA GT Championship). McLaren developed the longtail '97 car to overcome prototype-derived entries from Porsche and Mercedes-Benz


ABOVE: The two car 'works BMW' entry into the FIA GT Championships of 1997. The entry was run by Charly Lamm & Team Schnitzer with drivers JJ Lehto/Steve Soper and Peter Kox/Robert Ravaglia


ABOVE: The Gulf and Davidoff sponsored 'British team' entry of the 1997 car. This was a three car McLaren-supported private entry run by the 95/96 GTC team. Driver line-up: Jean-Marc Gounon / Pierre-Henri Raphanel, John Nielsen / Thomas Bscher, Ray Bellm / Andrew Gilbert-Scott.
