Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
What can I say? If you haven't seen this film, see it. It's much more than worth it. Angelina Jolie is the perfect Lara Croft, and she worked so hard for this film it's unbelievable. She went through fitness training, accent training, and having her tattoos painted over constantly. The result is brilliant, and her performance absolutely golden, (she even managed a stunt one of her stunt doubles didn't!). But enough about her, let's talk action. We see such scenes as bungee-ballet, (followed by a trigger-happy attack on her home to find a sacred artefact - fantastic), a chopper dropping her of in the middle of a jungle sat in a Land Rover, and skiing through narrow tunnels being pulled by huskies. Edge-of-the-seat action, unbeleivable sets and gorgeous dialogue, what more could anyone want?
Save The Last Dance
This emotional rollercoaster of a film really grips your attention. Ever tried mixing deep feelings with the brashness of the Chicago Ghetto? Well, it works surprisingly well. No doubt, some real issues are explored here, including bereavement, love, teenage pregnancy, drugs and crime. The reality of these issues are magnified and shoved right in your face in such a way that you can't ignore them. Sara (Julia Stiles) has lost her mother (and idol) to a road acident, which stops her performing ballet which she loves to do (look out for her mother saying "you don't need luck, you dance like an angel" - tear to the eye for certain, she falls in love with Derek (Sean Patrick Thomas) and he motivates her to live her dream. It's heart warming. This is beautifully tied in with Sara learning how to live in the Ghetto. There is some fantastic wit in this film, and the acting is jus brilliant from every actor. Thomas Carter, we applaud you! He truly is a fantastic director. However, this film is most deftinitely a chick-flick. If your ideal idea of a film is Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, this isn't really for you...
What Women Want
A great laugh from beginning to end. Nick Marshall (Mel Gibson) is the typical guy - a flirt, a real man's man, all he knows about women is that if they're hot enough they're great. Until a woman (Helen Hunt) takes his promotion at work that is. Now he's got to understand women if he wants to keep his job, and that's not a problem when he has an accident that changes his life. Now he can hear what every woman around him is thinking! What Women Want is very funny, and whats more it has a fantastic soundtrack, boasting names such as Frank Sinatra and Meredith Brooks. And we see a little compassion at the end. Witty dialogue and excellent acting, it's a must-see!
Miss Congeniality
A serial killer is on the loose, and only one person can stop them - Sandra Bullock is Grace Hart, an FBI agent in New Jersey who couldn't tell a lipstick from a nightstick. Now they have worked out where the killer will strike next - the Miss United States Pageant, and tough-as-nails Agent Hart has to go undercover at the Pageant as a New Jersey contestant by the name of Gracie Lou Freebush. This hilarious film pushes even Bullock's femininity as Gracie tries to withstand the pressure of giggles, gossip and glamour. Sir Michael Caine offers some fabulous acting as Gracie's consultant, Victor Melling. This film mixes comedy with suspense beautifully, and the dialogue is smashing. Unfortunately, there is a little romance involved which doesn't really fit in, but this aside, Miss Congeniality is a 5-star hit!
Halloween Resurrection
If you're going to make a film using head-cams in a Big Brother-type experience set in Michael Myers' house, just don't bother. If you insist, at least hire actors worth the money. This poor sequel to the successful series really blackens the name of Halloween, with it's best names being Sean Patrick Thomas and Busta Rhymes. Jamie Lee Curtis is killed off at the beginning, rather too quickly for someone who was in the rest of the series, and then Busta puts a few teenagers into Micheal Myers' house to broadcast clues of his upbringing across the nation. But then Micheal Myers gets in and kills them all - in the least creative ways possible. The movie is plotless and the camera's are dreadful. Sean Patrick Thomas can act, but the rest can't, not in the slightest. Give it a go, but don't expect to be either scared or amazed - you won't be.
The Blair Witch Project
This film is low-budget, but hell, they squeeze the most out of the budget that they can. The most intriguing thing about this film is the realisticity of it. Three teenagers go out to the Black Hills Forest in Burkitsville to film a documentary about the ledgendary Blair Witch (in case you're wondering where she got the name, Burkitsville used to be called Blair.) On doing so, they step into a wilderness of mind games, freaky noises and unusual objects. As the film progresses we see the teens lose sanity and fall out with each other. The camera is pretty dark at night times. After all, they did use cameras a college would use, but it get's a tad annoying when you can't really see whats going on. Furthermore, the constant bickering between the characters really gets up your nose. But the greatest thing about Blair Witch is how is puts you right there in the movie. Very chilling.
