Devil May Cry

Shinji Mikami was involved in this destined-to-be-worldwide-smash, so it's a horror game? Well no, but it certainly has his touch, with all the camera angles and sounds etc....which create a mood like no other game, DMC was RE4, but it's good to see a birth of a new series especially with the demise of Resident Evil from the PS2.......

Dante is the son of a guy who banished evil, original? Hey hold on listen..... His father was a devil, but aren't devils normally evil? YES, so you get the picture, Dante's dad was a devil.... and a rebellious devil who went against his own kind to help the humans, he became a legend, married a human woman, somehow made her pregnant, had their baby, and naturally he was born half devil and one half human, and obviously that was Dante, and Devil May Cry gives birth to one of the greatest heroes the videogames industry has ever seen....

Lets talk moves: In which Dante has a load of, you start off on the game with a simple (not very simple please note) double gun-jump-combo, with devastating attacks constantly threatened towards you by the dark side, you need to evade their attacks and this has a load of neat evasion moves which includes the ability to roll to the sides, jump and roll in midair, but the beauty isn't just about avoidance, it's all about what can be linked up in retaliation: For example jump up in the sky to avoid an incoming projectile attack, and on the way towards the ground unleash a slow-ish attack from your guns, this makes the whole experience feel strangely familiar to films from a certain director named John Woo. The moves all come at a price, and fighting off hordes of nasty creatures will give you the red orbs that allow you to buy them and make Dante stronger and stronger. The Devil Trigger is Dante's most powerful state, as you may have already guessed this changes him in to a devil, in which there are 2 main ones of, the first is gained as you get possession of the Alastor long sword, giving him powerful Arial capabilities etc. Each of these two devils have their own attacks to learn by using the red orbs-picked-up from disintegrated monsters, and there is plenty I can tell you that.

Dante's moves may be the main thing that make him cool, but the way in which he attacks the enemies with mouthy humour, and shows a different side to his character later on in the story, also makes him a cooler than ice character. Talking of the story I mentioned the basic build, but I feel I have to also mention the quality of the in-game-cut scenes, which are acted out at near perfect qualities. (SPOILER!!!!) The opening sequence sees Dante in his office in which his business happens to be called Devil May Cry (devil hunting business, evil devils I must stress) he gets a visit (and a beating) from a leather clad woman who deeply resembles his mother known only as Trish, she rides coolly through the wall of his office on the saddle of a motorbike, stabs Dante with his own sword (to make sure he is a devil and all that stuff) then explains she is not his enemy and why she is here, then they arrive on the games location based island(SPOILER FINISHED!!!!). The whole concept of Devil May Cry was action, and that's why these scenes are delivered so lightly, with each scene lasting less then five minutes, and also very infrequent (with the last parts being the exception). I do feel that the game could have done with a bit extra story scenes with the reason being these scenes are excellent, with a brilliant script, and clever character facial expressions, although the lip synching isn't up to much, (as soon as you see Dante speaking on the opening sequence you will understand what I mean) and the funny thing about that is that the game was originally acted out by Americans even on release in Japan, saying that most of Capcom's games are and the lip synching isn't much cop on any of their games, take Resident Evil for example.

The game is split in to 23 missions and this doesn't include the 12 secret ones, with some lasting barely 3 minutes while others last nearly 30 minutes, most of them are fairly straight forward, and pose mainly as a slight rest from the relentless action. You have to be always ready for a huge battle, as most rooms contain a lot of monsters, kill a load, and then a load more appear, but this brings us on to one of the more severe problems of the whole experience, most rooms exited and then re-entered will spell the respawn of the enemies you have just killed, giving you a chance to gain orbs on false pretences, this doesn't pose such a problem with the ammo, as every single gun picked up contains unlimited amounts to play around with, I do feel that this could have been avoided and once killed none should return only on forced backtracking, I suppose this is another point to prove that this is an action game, and a full non-stop action game!
