| simmons college feminist union mission statement |
| the feminist union (or, the f.u.) is a campus organization at simmons college, which serves as a forum for students to discuss, be involved with, and organize within/around feminism and radical activism, on or off campus, and any local or global issues that relate. issues and topics that are discussed and focused on are decided by current members and the changing times. the f.u. changes and adapts constantly depending on the time, members, and current local or global issues and movements. the f.u. is involved in activism and organizing outside of simmons college, as well as inside, and therefore seeks to create connections and contacts between feminists, activists, and movements outside of the simmons community, and simmons itself. the f.u.'s major goal is to provide simmons students with resources, information, context, and outlets for feminist activism. the organization is open to all and any simmons students - we have very broad definitions of feminism and activism. because simmons college requires a forced hierarchy of at least a president and a treasurer (for logistics) for every organization which operates with a budget, the feminist union has a president and a treasurer on paper, although we are free to make up/create and fill all kinds of other leadership positions, such as special committee chairs and representatives or liasons, or have none at all. and we encourage every member to be as much involved as they like in all our activities, regardless of how many 'officers' there are. the f.u. would rather decisions be made by the entire group (as loosely defined as it is), rather than just the 'officers'. no person has to do anything special to be a member of the f.u. we love people who come to our meetings when they can, people who organize events and activities with us, people who can only come to some events or meetings, people who are on our email list and receive our updates, or people who just like to stay in touch and know what we're up to, etc. so there are many ways to be involved with the feminist union and we encourage anyone to do only whatever the can or want to do. there is no requirement of anything at all or prerequisite to be a member. |
