Research-Based Strategies for Increasing Students Achievement

By Robert J. Marzano, Debra J. Pickering, and Jane E. Pollack
Chapter 5: Homework and Practice
The amount of homework must be different in different grades. The higher is the grade the higher will be amount of homework. Research confirms that homework produces beneficial results if given in the right amount. For lower grades, the amount of homework should be small just for them to acquire good habits, foster positive attitudes towards school, and know that learning is to work at home and in school. The more homework students do, the better their achievement. Parental involvement should be kept to a minimum just to facilitate the children learning, not to make the homework for them. The rules for homework need to be established and parents need to be evolved, clarify the purpose of the homework assignments to the parents. Providing quality and faster feedback is very important as it will help students to identify problems and correct them. "Homework and practice are ways of extending the school day and providing students with opportunities to refine and extend their knowledge."
