| Raised on a small farm in Hanover County, Virginia, Mary Smith acquired a love of traditional folk music from her father, who was an avid collector of traditional American folk music, country and western, bluegrass and gospel. It was a natural step for her to take up the guitar, and her interest in the traditional ballads of Appalachia led her to explore the music of Ireland and the British Isles. She is a popular performer at pubs, coffeehouses, festivals and small concerts around Virginia, and did a series of folk club gigs in Scotland in 2003.
