Chapter 4: Lost
"Here's my cellphone number if you need anything. I won't be home until 3 P.M. but call me if it's an emergency. Like... um... if you're lost in the middle of nowhere," Dianne's mother handed a small piece of paper with a few important numbers in it. She reached for her handbag and wristwatch. She was ready to attend an important meeting held by her husband's trading company.
Dianne took the paper and looked at it for a second. Then she folded it and slipped the note in her pocket. "You worry too much. I won't get lost," she said with a convincing look.
"I know. But still, don't lose the paper," her mother said. "And remember, just go straight and turn left, then continue straight ahead until you see the..."
"Yeah, yeah, yeah... until I see that very huge supermarket. And I remember the rest of the way. Don't worry, Mom."
"Fine then. I better get going now. Take care," her mother said as she left the house. Dianne was supposed to be left alone at home that day. She didn't like being left alone in the house ever since a thief broke into her house when she was eleven. That was definitely an unforgettable and a traumatic experience for her. She'd rather see hundreds of ghosts wandering in her house than a thief stealing the jewelleries and tying her on a chair. But she was lucky enough when Alicia suggested her to come to her house. She explained the directions from Dianne's house on the day they had the trip together.
Dianne phoned Alicia just before going to her house. Alicia said that she was waiting for her and that she made an apple pie for Dianne's first visit to her house.

Now, go straight, Dianne told herself. She memorised the directions the night before, and she was sure that she wouldn't get lost. But she was quite nervous that she had to walk alone in the city that was still unfamiliar to her.
Finally, she reached the supermarket. She was a little bit relieved because she was only one or two kilometres away from Alicia's house. She was about to continue on her way, but she had eyes on the supermarket's advertisements. She decided to enter the supermarket after she read the advertisement that said
Buy four sandwiches and get a free litre of ice cream!!

Dianne stopped when she left the supermarket. She was horrified. She forgot the next direction to Alicia's house. She blamed herself for entering the supermarket. Suddenly she remembered to call her mother.
But no... she must be in the middle of the meeting, she thought. What am I going to do? What am I going to do??

She was hopeless and sat down on the beach. Unexpectedly, her eyes caught a familiar figure walking out of the supermarket. She stood up and focused on the person. She was certain that he was Andy, so she ran to approach him. The previous day she promised to forget him. But then she had no other choice.
"Andy! Wait!" Dianne shouted as she ran to him. Her body swayed to the left and right caused by the shopping bags she was carrying. Andy heard her shouting his name. He turned to see her gasping for breath.
"Hey, what's up?" He said. To her own surprise, she saw him smiling for the first time. She saw tons of groceries in his shopping bags. She never thought he'd go shopping in the supermarket.
"Can I come along with you?" Dianne said. Her face was asking for hope and kindness that she wished Andy would give.
"Sure. Where are you going?" Andy said as he lead her to his car. He opened the baggage and put his groceries in it. Then he offered to let her put her items in the baggage. She refused and went into the car.
What a cool car, she thought. Andy's car was a sports car. The grey Jaguar had a clean and polished interior, which was the opposite from what she expected.
"I'm going to your house. I thought Alicia told you about it."
"No," Andy said and glanced at her. "But that answers my question. I didn't know why Alicia woke up so early to clean and tidy the house. But now I do."

Wow, that was the longest sentence I've ever heard from him, she thought. On the way to his house, Dianne had her first real conversation with Andy. Unlike other times, he showed much of his expression. He often smiled, giggled, and laughed. Dianne felt more comfortable with him that way. They talked about their families, friends, and school. She figured out that Andy was 19 years old and in the university. She found out that his car was a gift from his father for achieving the Top Five Student Award in the university. From that, she knew that he was incredibly intelligent like she guessed before, and that completely impressed her.
