The Edisto River
The Edisto river is my favorite place to be.
These photos were taken not far from my house.

Interesting Features --
The Edisto River Canoe & Kayak Trail covers 66 miles
of the river for which it's named.
The Edisto is reputed to be the world's longest free-flowing "blackwater" stream.
"Blackwater" is a term that not only describes the color of the tannin-rich water,
but also refers to the peaceful rate of flow that characterizes such rivers

The "black" water of the Edisto and other rivers
of this region is actually the color of tea,
the result of pigments imparted from the vegetation found in the area.
The water is generally crystal clear, allowing one to see the sandy bottom almost continuously.

Baldcypress trees and their kindred water loving plants
are found in abundance along the river and in adjacent swamp land.
There are some ridges with pine stands.
After the confluence of the North Fork and South Fork,
the main stem of the Edisto becomes more open with a few sand bars.

Gradually, the Edisto widens and moves more slowly
as it plies its course to the ocean. In the lower sections,
shore birds are seen in abundance.
This river is prime habitat for wood stork
and American alligators.
