Chapter 4     Long Stories     Chapter 6
Chapter 5
Claudia felt as if she fell for days. She looked on all sides but all she could see was a blinding darkness. She wanted to cry. She didn't know where she was or if she would be home in time for her supper. Then, suddenly, she hit the bottom. It wasn't hard or anything. It was soft and fuzzy like a cozy mattress.
"Now what could this be?" ,she asked herself.
She looked all around her but all she could see was darkness. She sat there for a long time trying to think of a plan. Even if she could find the hole, she couldn't very well climb up it. Then, Claudia made to get up but she heard a loud shriek come from above her and before she could look up, something large fell atop her head.
"CLAUDIA!!!!" ,cried Nina.
Nina looked around but all she heard was a muffled sort of sound, "Claudia? Is that you?" ,asked Nina quietly.
Then, Nina felt something wriggling underneath her. She got up and reached her hand down into the darkness. Someone caught her hand and Nina lifted her up onto her unsteady feet.
"Claudia?" ,asked Nina.
"It's me Nina. I've been sitting down here for a dreadfully long time and we shan't get up that hole again and I can't see any other way out. Oh! What shall we do?!"
Claudia heard Nina sniffle and reached around till she found her and gave her a hug, "Don't cry dear. Everything will be fine. Now let us see if this place does lead to some where."
Claudia clasped hands tightly with Nina's and they made their way to the left of where they had fallen. They must've walked for a very long time because by the time they saw the faintest of light in the distance, Nina was already half asleep on Claudia's shoulder. Finally, Claudia couldn't stand to walk another step. She picked Nina up in her arms and with her feet she searched for soft ground to lie on.
She found some soft grass and bushes and laid Nina and herself behind them, "Now if any unfriendly eyes should come we shan't be seen. Yet, I don't see how anyone could see through this dreadful darkness. It's absolutely terrifying. But I musn't be afraid. I have to be brave for Nina and I. I'll pretend it's a game. That's it! It's just another game."
And with these comforting words to herself she fell asleep.
