What we do:
We are a private group of citizens, dedicated to fostering good relations between Deaf and Hearing people -- though the use of American Sign Language (ASL), and other accepted means of communication. Our primary means of doing this is regular social gatherings over meals. Hence the name: Silent Dinners.
What you can do:
- learn American Sign Language! (More info farther down.)
- encourage your friends to learn ASL
- look for opportunities (like this one) to make Deaf friends
- start a sign-language group at your church
(or, for that matter, start a Deaf Church - start a sign-language group at your workplace
- buy books about ASL (dictionary, phrase book, etc.)
- practice, practice, practice!
have fun, fun, fun!
- After looking at many sites, this is the one that I most recommend for finding effecting ASL learing tools: Dr. Sign.
- Another very good ASL program is ASL University.
- It really helps to have a dictionary. I recommend this one.
- After you've studied the dictionary, you will probably discover the need for an ASL Phrase Book.
- If you still hunger for ASL resources, the folks at Sign Media helped to pioneer the concept.
