Enchanted Rock, located in Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, is a huge, pink, granite exfoliation dome that rises 425 feet above ground, 1825 feet above sea level, and covers 640 acres. It is one of the largest batholiths (underground rock formation uncovered by erosion) in the United States. The rock serves as a mecca for rock climbers, but visitors can also enjoy primitive backpacking, camping, hiking, picnicking, geological study, bird watching and star gazing. The short, steep hike to the top is a must, but another fun hike is to the top of Turkey Peak, where you will find this microbox. The park is part of the Peach Loop described on the Heart Of Texas Wildlife Trail - West map and is one of the best State Parks in Texas!

Directions:

Fredericksburg is about 250 miles west of Houston. Go west on I10, then north on Hwy 87, then west on Hwy 290. Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is 18 miles north of Fredericksburg or 10 miles south of Oxford on Ranch Road 965. Pay fee, get a map, then drive over bridge to intersection, turn right and park in lot near summit trail.

Clues:

Walk to the gazebo and go north on the summit trail for about 200 yards to a trail jct. Go right on the Loop trail and follow the yellow arrow markers for about .5 mile as you go around the right side of Enchanted Rock. Just after you pass Turkey Peak on your right, go right on a small path to its summit. It is a little steep in places and care should be taken. From the summit facing Enchanted Rock, look right (north) for a small, solitary tree growing out of the rocks about 15 steps away. The camo microbox is at its base under a rock. Please re-cover well and be discreet if others are there.
