2003 expanded upon 2002's new format, increasing the round count to 5 and also introducing the race format where each team member got a 30 minute race rather than a whole team doing 2 hours.

This was used for the last 2 rounds, and was a great success.
Building on their speed from the 2002 campaign, Leeds A were preseason favourites, but come the last round of the championship it looked like the momentum was with Imperial A, who had won 2 out of their last 3 races and finished second in the other.

However Leeds beat them in the end by keep their scoring consistent while Imperial lost out due to their drop score coming in the first round. However Oxford Brookes were not far behind in 3rd.

A record
22 universities took part, fielding a massive 38 teams between them, and the championship visited prize winning turnip country for Round 4 at Ellough Park.

Swansea Institutes Team finished a very creditable
7th.

Championship Name:
Inter University Karting Championship

Organised by:
University of Nottingham Motorsport Club and Imperial College Motor Club

Nottingham and Imperial took over the organisation for 2002, with Imperial leading the move to using Club100's fleet of 100cc 2-stroke TKMs. A record 33 teams from 17 universities took part, but overall, 2002 was Loughborough's year. After threatening to dominate in previous years but never delivering, Loughborough took the lead at round 1 and never lost it. Never out of the top two positions, and scoring the championship's first ever 1-2 along the way, Lougborough looked like champions all year. The only team capable of keeping up with them were Leeds A, running them close by finishing only 5 points behind overall - the difference between 2nd and 3rd was a huge 70 points. Showing that both teams must be considered strong
