F1 Drivers Challenge
Mark Johnston�s story could so easily have been the same as so many young motorsport fans who never even get the chance to prove themselves behind the wheel. It isn�t, however, thanks to the inaugural Channel 5 programme �Be a Grand Prix Driver�.
En route to completing a Degree in Motorsport Design at Swansea University, Mark spotted an advert publicising a new competition that intended to take a newcomer without a racing licence and give them a chance at a career as a racing driver.
For a youngster that had competed in as many kart races as he could afford, safe in the knowledge that he would never even come close to having the money to make it in to full car racing, it was a dream come true. And when he lined up against 999 other hopefuls, he was simply in it to enjoy the experience.
As it was Mark went on to win, and do exceptionally well with his prize � a race in the FIA Thoroughbred Grand Prix Championship at the wheel of a Tyrrell Formula One car. Since then Mark has found a temporary home in the highly competitive TVR Tuscan Championship, although his heart remains set on single-seaters in the long-term, and he has set about establishing himself in the 170mph, 460bhp, one-make sportscar championship.
On his debut he took fifth position at Rockingham, a track he had never seen before, and earned major acclaim throughout the tight-knit Tuscan paddock. Mark is clearly an outstanding talent and has the potential to do great things, whichever discipline he ends up choosing.
