About our Team

SWIM SEASON
Our swim season consists of two separate leagues – the summer and winter
leagues. Everyone who is a member of the team can participate in the summer
session and the EFSL regular season. Additionally, EFSL individual
Championships are limited to swimmers who competed in at least three meets
during the EFSL regular season and received a qualifying time in at least
one individual event during the current season or those swimmers seeded at the
pre-champs meeting held one week prior to Individual Championships.
Sigonella's NAS I and II pools are heated, so swimmers are able to continue
practices and prepare for the Berlin Championships. Typically, more swimmers attend
the summer league, although our growing team adds more and more members for
the entire EFSL season.

SWIM MEETS
Due to our geographical location, we are considered “remote” for the EFSL
season. As a “remote” member, Sigonella swimmers are required to attend a
minimum of 3 scheduled meets each season, one of which can be the Divisional
Championships. Meet attendance is extremely important for receiving legal
qualifying times for individual championships. All swimmers are encouraged
to participate in as many meets are possible. Swimmers may attend any
scheduled EFSL meet the team as a whole is not scheduled to attend. The
team normally travels to the Naples, Vicenza meets, and at least one Germany meet
a year. Contact the team statisticians at least two weeks in advance to
make arrangements.

The team hosts meets at the NAS I pool. Sigonella Swordfish parents are an
integral part of the meet process, and serve as officials, stroke and turn
judges, visiting team liaisons and a variety of other positions that are
both fun and rewarding. Summer meets are not part of the EFSL schedule, but
the team does swim against other bases who do not have the facilities or
organization to be part of the league. Teams as far away as La Maddalena,
and local Italian teams help keep the Swordfish active during the summer months.

HOW DO I BECOME A SWORDFISH?
We encourage new community members who have school-aged children interested
in swimming to stop by the NAS I pool, or call 624-4334 for more
information. You can download the Registration Papers on the Documents Page
of our website. Although Naval Air Station Sigonella Morale, Welfare and
Recreation sponsors the team, a core group of parents volunteers their time
to do the administrative requirements for the team. Feel free to email the
Sigonella Swordfish Executive Board at the email link, if you have any
questions or need additional information. Our team continues to grow!
This fun, healthy and team-building activity has quickly become one of the
premier youth activities for Sigonella family members. Join the Sigonella
Swordfish today!
