Learn about Sigma Nu

Sigma Nu Fraternity was founded at Virginia Military Institute on Jan. 1, 1869.  At that time there were only three founding members.  These men were James Frank Hopkins, Judge Greenfield Quarles and James McIllvaine Riley.  This chapter was known as the Alpha Chapter.  Soon after, a Beta chapter was started at University of Virginia.  From there Sigma Nu Fraternity slowly but surely spread across the country.  Sigma Nu now has over 200 chapters nation wide.  Such famous men as Trent Lott, Harrison Ford, Archie Manning and Bob Barker are Sigma Nu alumni.

Sigma Nu Fraternity came to the University of Minnesota in 1904.  The first member of the Gamma Tau chapter was Donald Schriffter Blair.  In 1930, our chapter house was built.  This house stands today at 307 16th Ave SE, Minneapolis MN.

During the late 1980's and early 1990's the Gamma Tau chapter of Sigma Nu Fraternity fell upon hard times.  The chapter was shut down and our charter was revoked.  In May 1996, the chapter was rechartered thanks in part to the effort and hardwork of men such as Bob Hayes, Jeff Oscarson, Dustin Flatt, Ken Reitz, Andy Hoentanner, Mitch Theis, Bill Schoenbauer, Paul Vajgrt, Chad Ramler, Brian Mears, Chad Borseth and especially Mark Dusbobeck.

Currently, the house has its most members since before it was shut down in the early 1990's.  With four fall pledges and the good possibility of ten or more for spring, the Gamma Tau chapter is finally stable at the University of Minnesota.
