What is Mental Retardation ?

The term mental retardation is used by Special Olympics to identify individuals who are eligible for participation. People with mental retardation mature at a below-average rate and experience unusual difficulty in learning, social adjustment and economic productivity.

How prevalent is mental retardation?

250,000,000 individual in the world have mental retardation. 7,000,000 individuals in the USA and an estimate of 4,000,000 in the Philippines have mental retardation.

What are the causes of mental retardation?

Mental retardation can be caused by any condition, which impairs development of the brain before birth, during birth or in the early childhood years. Well over 250 causes have already been discovered, but they account for only one-fourth of the cases.

Who are the people with mental retardation?

Mental retardation cuts across the lines of race, educational, social and economic background. It can occur in anyone. As a matter of fact, heredity components are known to account for only a fraction of the cases of mental retardation.
