human history/cruelty

an essay by the sidewalk philosopher

november 2001

i was sleeping one tuesday morning in spetember when i was woken up by an excited younger brother. i sat glued to the television for the next two hours...

The bombs drop continually, the screams permeate my consciousness, erupting from the rubble below, penetrating the heavens above. No one hears me as I scream for mercy, for an exception to the rule of human cruelty. I cannot bear it anymore. The world around me fades to black, and I am gone.

The world is a brutal place, its natural wonders edged with dangers. But even more hazardous, and even more destructive are the men and women who inhabit her. They cannot seem to comprehend that, in order to survive, they must cooperate and communicate. How can they, inferior species that they are, not stop killing themselves off? They cage the doves that may promise peace and poison the olive branches in their midst they are cruel to themselves, to the earth and to their surroundings.

We are helpless, captive on a spinning globe of eternity, with no end in sight. We could work together, and endeavor to make our time on this perpetual orb a productive one, but we do not. We do not listen, we do not hear each other. We destroy each other. We cease to exists as soon as we destroy another, for we have ceased to care, and as soon as we cease to care we, and part of the potential of the human race, vanishes forever. We are creatures of grudge and revenge. We are creatures of material rewards, which we are content to accrue at the expense of others. We are creatures of cruelty and destruction.

Throughout history, mankind has tried to stop its evil ways, but even these attempts crumble into mere copies of the very systems they strive to end. Communism resulted in the cold war and genocide in the USSR, just and fascism resulted in world war and the holocaust. Now, in the Middle East, nations are once again denying their consciences and taking up arms. Any one of these conflicts has the potential to destroy the human race, but so far we have been lucky. Me must not take advantage of this luck any longer.

Human cruelty, the ruler of our world for millennia has defined our history on this planet. Every time we are cruel, we toss a dice whose binding arbitration will define our course in the future. We have never been unlucky so far, though we have come very close. If we continue to laugh in the face of the odds stacked against us, we are just waiting for lady luck to leave, disgusted, and for snake eyes to impale our very existence. Human cruelty is a dead end. Many individuals know it. Then, why does it continue?
