To help prepare our community for the necessity of joining the workforce,
our schools and communities must join together to teach reading skills
to all. The Delta Upsilon Chapter at Southeastern Illinois College chose
"Reading For Our Future" as the basis of our community service projects
this year.
When over two million people in the state of Illinois have below a sixth
grade reading level, there is definitely a need for concern. Our chapter
saw this need and acted upon it.
To promote
literacy among the young and old alike, we established the following objectives:
To
promote awareness of the need for literacy education.
To actively participate in lteracy activites, such as reading to youngsters.
To help raise money for the Literacy Department and their projects at

Southeastern Illinois College.
To donate reading materials within the community.
In order
to reach our objectives, we decided to:
Distribute literacy brochures in three local festival parades.
"Read For Our Future" -- volunteer to read to children ages preschool through

fourth grade.
Help with fundraising for SIC's Literacy Department.
Participate in "Make a Difference Day" by collecting good, used storybooks
for the

Carmi Pre-K Center and by collecting new storybooks for "Storytime"
at the

Carmi Public Library.
Create a literacy brochure for SIC's Literacy Department.
Implement fundraising for literacy supplies and Christmas gifts for two
needy

families in our community.
Decorate a "Literacy" Christmas tree for SIC's Seasonal Stroll to promote

awareness of our efforts among the community.
Create awareness of workforce literacy.
Obtain and donate literacy software to area schools and libraries.
