CASTING Director Jonathan Demme felt that if he cast a Mega-Star like Robert DeNiro or Jack Nicholson to play the role of Dr.Hannibal Lecter it would focused the audiences attention on his performance thus detracting their attention from he great storyline. Jonathan Demme Cleverley decided to cast a lesser known yet by no means lesser acomplished actor, Anthony Hopkins. Anthony Hopkins went on to win the Best Actor Oscar for his astonishng performance. Jonathan Demme originally wanted Michelle Pheiffer to play the part of Clarice Starling. However after reading the Script Jodie Foster fell in love with the character and decided to ask for the part herself, she got it. In order to prepare for her Oscar winning performance Jodie Foster spent time with Special Agent Mary Anne Krause to help get a feel for the role. Scott Glenn (Jack Crawford) also prepared for his role with an agent called John Douglas. Glenn had to view crime scene photographs and listen to FBI tapes. Glenn says that "to this day I find myself having unpleasant dreams about the things I found out".
WHERE IT ALL STARTED The writer Thomas Harris wrote the book The Silence of the Lambs in 1988, seven years after having written Red Dragon. It became an iternational bestseller and one of the most talked about crime fiction books in history. When SOTL was beggining to make its way into Hollywood, Jonathan Demme (Director) wasn't interested in making the film. He said "It wasnt he kind of thing he found interesting", however after reading the book he met with the films screenwriter Ted Tally. After speaking with the screenwriter he immediatly signed on saying that the character of Clarice Starling was what changed his mind.
THE CHARACTER OF JAME GUMB: The serial Killer Jame "Buffalo Bill" Gumb was a hybrid of three real-life serial murderers. The first being Ed Gein who lived in squalor but like Buffalo Bill kept his late mothe'rs room and clothes in pristine condition. The second was Ted Bundy who was executed in 1989 for the murder of a 12-year-old-girl. He like Buffalo Bill used a phony cast on his wrist to gain sympathy from women. Finally the third being Gary Michael Heidnick who kept women in his dark and dingy basement/dungeon. This inspired the well in which Catherine Martin is kept hostage throughout the film.
INTERESTING FACTS: -The shooting of the Film began in Novemeber 1989 in Washington D.C -A large part of the film was shot in Pittsburg.
