PROJECT 2001 TEAM: Road to SHS, The website.
Part II

Sacred Heart's Webteam continued its battle after the launching of the school's website. Lam and Alex, together with other members in the Webteam, worked hard, days and nights to find out all the information and skills needed to make the site even better and to stage it higher in the international level. The webteam struggled hard to learn and practise the very basic language of webpage building - The HTML. Co-operation is the word to describe the atmosphere during then. With the encouragement from Mr. Ong, the members in the team exchanged ideas among themselves. They constructed site of their class, idol and so on.

Months passed. The atmosphere remained the same. One day, Lam explored his computer as he was bored. It was quiet except the clicking sound of the mouse in his room. Accidentally, he found a program called Front Page Express. Before this, the webteam were using the Notepad and HotDog Pro as the HTML editor. Lam analysed the program and tried to use it. In conclusion, he found out that it was a very useful program to construct a website. He then rang Alex.

Lam and Alex heard the software before, but it was a stranger to them. Since the function of the software had been discovered, they rushed lightningly the next day to a computer softwares shop to get the copy of Front Page 98 -- a complete copy of Front Page. With the assistance of the software, their work became easier, HTML editing became easier and much faster.

More and more contents were done after that. From a bare-foot journey to a car journey, the progress of development was faster than the days before. The members did not give up trying to build a quality website. They, on other hand, worked on the image design. They explored every related software. They did not let go any chance of learning website constructing knowledge. With the great fighting spirit, they take on the of ActiveX rather than HTML.

Weeks later, the second version was done. Sweat showered every inches of the body of every members.

The second version of the SHS website was led by Thomas as he found a server which was willing to sponsor some webspace to accomodate our ever-expanding website. More information was added including the latest news, exams results, details of school's clubs, and etc. Although no frame was used in the site, the layout was in the higher class (nicer) and there was a significant improvement in graphic design as well. The struggle was worthwhile. The webteam obtained what they were targetting for.

Teacher advisor, Mr. Ong rewarded the team with a big praising thumb.

The frontpage of second version of SHS website which was based in 2020 Net. Unfortunately the server was closed due to some undisclosed reasons.

This is the website which which took away the top spot in the Sarawak Secondary School's Web Design competition organized by SAINS.
We are proud to present it to you http://schools.sains.com.my/smbsh/

1999 was a difficult year. Most of the members in webteam were in exam class. Teacher advisor, Mr. Ong went outstation to further his studies. But this did not stop the destination of the team. The team continued to work on the site. Computer Club was then reformed after its dismissal a year ago. It changed from class teaching form to the club form. It was led by a talented Form 4 student by the name of Joni Kang. Mr. Ngu Joo Hen was the teacher advisor.

The school's webteam which was under the Computer Club increased in its size. Students who are interested in website building were extracted to the team. Jobs and duties were divided among the members. Some took charge of HTML programming, while some in data collecting. It was like running a company.

Our chance to shine came in the month of July when the team received the news of Secondary School's Web Design Competition from the teacher advisor. It was a competition organized by the Sarawak Information System (SAINS).

The team acted quickly when they got the news as they were running out of time. Every hour was a rush hour. The competition would be expired by the National Day and the exam was approaching. After the discussion of the layout design, forms were distributed to clubs to fill in their information. Members in the team scheduled their time to perfection, studying while building a site of the best quality. On the way to the completion of the site, they realized that the site doesn't look as good as they were expected from early on, they decided to change it, but time doesn't allow them to do so. They had to hand up their 'unsatisfied' project to the organiser as the expiry date was closing in. The site was not in favor to win the award in their point of view. It was a dream, yes, a dream for the team to win the competition. In the team's point of view, other competitors had done better jobs.

"It can't be, it can't be true.......It's impossible." this was the reaction of the members when they heard the news. Sacred Heart had beaten the other twenty schools to win the competition. Fax was received and it was proven true. It was a dream.....came.....true.

A small pupae had turned into a beatiful butterfly. SHS webteam's effort had been recognized at the state level. Simple and high-tech. The site was in the simplest design with DHTML and Flash used. Navigation at its easiest and attractive contents gained useful points in the competition.

Today, SHS Webteam continues its services to the school and to the nation. Now, the latest, Project 2001 - the SHS Millennium Website. This project is led by Alex Ling, one of the many successors who will get on with the journey which started with a dream, the journey of SHS website. This, maybe, the first step towards the new millennium and the new era of information technology, SHS Millennium Website is stamping a mark on the 21st century.

The SHS Website Motto : Building A Future Of Our Own.
