Wishful Thinking

I wish Susie was a sammich, she crowed. Sure enough Susie disappeared and a tuna fish sandwich was sitting in her spot, Vanessas favorite. I wish sammich was Susie. Her little sister immediately returned.

What happen? Susie asked. The explanation excited her. Vaessa a genie.

No, stupid, Ashley glared at her. Genies dont make their own wishes.

Dont call me stupid, Susie cried.

That wasnt nice, Vanessa yelled, tightening her grip on Melody. I wish Ashley was a dolly smaller than Meldy.

No, Melody gasped as her oldest cousin dwindled in seconds. Her size was bad enough, but how could anyone survive at three and half inches? Her aunt and uncle could never hope to raise a girl that small without squashing her.

Im sorry, Ashley cried. She ran over and hugged her gigantic sisters ankle and climbed onto her foot.

I wish Ashley wasnt small anymore. To Melodys amazement, the smaller girl rapidly grew back, jumping off her sisters foot to keep from hurting her. I wish Meldy
wasnt small anymore. Once again, Melody remained doll-sized.

Thank you, Ashley said, hugging her sister so tightly that Melody was being crushed against the five year olds body. Being smaller than a dolly was not cool.

It isnt so cool being doll-sized either, she added to the giant girls once she could breathe again. Why doesnt the wish work on me anymore?

Vanessa repeated a phrase shed heard her parents say many times, I wish I knew. Her face brightened up.
Cool. Now I know why Meldy doll stays a doll. I wished that Meldy would be in our game forever.

You mean Ill be doll-sized for the rest of my life? When I die, your folks will have to bury me in a matchbox?

No, silly Meldy, matchboxes too big for you.

Maybe not, Ashley suggested. Make her smaller.

Before Melody could make a sound shed voiced it. I wish Meldy was smaller.

Melody groaned in defeat as she felt the tingles return. Her cousins grip was getting looser by the second and she was in imminent danger of a deadly fall. Unfortunately, Vanessa tightened her grip and nearly crushed the teeny adult. Finally, she transferred Melody to her other hand and set her on an outstretched palm. She stood in the center and watched the edges moving ever further outward. A panicked thought entered her brain: she might shrink away altogether. Her enormous little cousins face was a skyscraper before she leapt into action.

Stop the shrinking!

Can you see her? Ashley asked. She saw a pair of her fathers reading glasses and held them over the minute speck. Shes almost gone. I think shes trying to say something, her mouth looks like its moving.

Maybe she want be smaller? Susie offered.

No, she prolly knows shes getting smaller all on her own. Unless her brain too small to think.

I wish Meldy stop shrinking, Vanessa said right as her cousin was on the edge of still being visible without a microscope.

Ashley ran and got a real magnifying glass to peer down at the micro person her cousin had become. Shes like a flea or somethin now. Smaller than the tiniest flea. Keep your hand still, she ordered her sister. She ran to their bedroom and came back with a jar theyd gotten on a trip to Maryland. She carefully tipped the teeniest amount near the flyspeck of a model.

Melody looked up in horror as huge objects came hurtling towards her. She jumped out of the way as huge rocks and boulders crashed onto the hand next to her. She tried to scream and couldnt make a sound. Running failed as she slid on the natural oils covering Vanessas skin. The ridges and rises in her palm were hills now and pores loomed like tiger pits.

Shes even smaller than sand, Ashley proudly announced. No, wait, she called out as Vanessa tried to dump the sand from her hand.

Oh yeah, I wish Meldy not small.

Melodys life was beginning to flash before her eyes when she felt a different tingle. The world was getting smaller for a change. She cheered as she envisioned herself getting her life back. That dream ended fast when it all stopped as she was seven inches tall again. Now what? she moaned.

Tea party! the three girls exclaimed.
