Let me take you on a tour;
We shall only need an hour
As we wander up and down
Exploring Shropshire's county town.
We shall start out from the Square
Through Grope Lane and up the stair
Called Bear Steps and we shall find
We have left Fish Street behind
Turning left down Butcher's Row
Into Pride Hill then we go;
At the top the new High Cross
Reminds us as we pass across
It was unveiled by the Queen -
Much history this place has seen.
Down Castle Street we wend our way
Past castle grim and shops so gay;
By Severn's side we pause awhile -
The name 'Pig Trough' will raise a smile
By Mardol Quay we see Welsh Bridge Frankwell and Copthorne on a ridge,
But we return to Mardol Head,
Shoplatch and Gullet - names not dead
But lingering on from year to year
Although their meaning is not clear.
But still we have not seen them all
And start again from the old Market Hall,
By High Street and Wyle Cop so steep
And English Bridge o'er Severn deep
Greyfriars we've passed; the Abbey's there - The small lane on the left's
Horsefair.
To see Whitehall we mustn't fail
Then cross the river by the jail,
Then like old traitors through Water Gate
We hurry so we'll not be late:
At St. Mary's Church we think we've seen plenty,
And wait in a queue for the next 'S20'
The driver's indifferent - it's not a race -
And in half an hour we're in Meole Brace.
