SOME OTHER OPTIONS IN EDUCATION? WHAT ABOUT SUPPLY TEACHING? A foot in the door, a chance to get some experience, to get known by principals... Supply teaching is, without a doubt, the worst job on planet! While things can go quite well, they can just as easily go very, very wrong. As a supply teacher, you are universally abused and despised by students, parents, colleagues, and administrators alike. At best you will be ignored, at worst you will be treated like dirt. And every time you answer the call and go to an assignment you risk your entire professional career - many students these days are more than willing to make accusations and charges against you! With the way it treats them, Ontario doesn't deserve a single supply teacher! There are few jobs on the planet more humiliating and abusive, which is why there is such a huge turn-over rate. Supply teaching is also unreliable - there is absolutely no commitment whatsoever on the part of the board. Day by day, one may or may not be called and one can sit for days or weeks on end waiting. Typical yearly incomes are dismal (perhaps well below half regular pay, and usually much lower than that) And remember - no work, no pay! Also, no benefits whatsoever. Regarding the foot-in-the-door' syndrome (frequently used to string along supply teachers) - just being on a supply list is no guarantee of ever being hired for a permanent position. WHAT ABOUT TEACHING IN THE NORTH/ NATIVE SCHOOLS? GOOD LUCK! CHECK OUT THIS LINK FOR THE TRUTH (you won't believe it). WHAT ABOUT PRIVATE SCHOOLS? Private schools are notorious for overworking and underpaying their employees. They are a business with the purpose of making a profit for the owner - education is secondary. For the most part, private schools represent the worst of working conditions. Teacher salaries can be half or less than that of public teachers. And usually there are no benefits, and certainly no professional protection. These employers can demand what they want and hire and fire as they please! The bottom line is always - money, profit, for the owner. WHAT ABOUT TUTORING? Better to deliver newspapers! Extremely low pay and relatively few hours. You'll be able to retire in about 350 years or so! Living is another thing. WHAT ABOUT TEACHING IN ANOTHER COUNTRY? Teach in the good old US of A? They don't want you, despite the fact they continually whine and grip about teacher shortages, and the red tape is both costly and frequently insurmountable! Teach in third world countries? If you like being a volunteer - paid next to nothing, to say nothing about questionable living conditions. ------------------------------------------------------------ CLICK BELOW FOR THE CONCLUSIONS . . . |
