EDUCATION MYTH #1: THERE EXISTS, OR IS IMMINENT, A MAJOR TEACHER SHORTAGE! (The story line for at least the past 15 years!) THE TRUTH: THERE IS NO TEACHER SHORTAGE! There is, in fact, a massive teacher glut - there are far more teachers than the system can possibly ever absorb, and thousands more pour out of the teachers colleges every year! In the past few years several principals have commented to me about being overwhelmed with 200-300 applications for a single teaching position! Adds for teaching positions have even included a warning about this. Many boards in southern Ontario have closed their supply list - even they are full. To deal with being swamped with an overwhelming number applications, more and more school boards are switching to private recruitment agencies to help them out. These agencies are vultures that charge unemployed teachers for the honour' of registering with them so that they may then have the privilege of applying to the boards. And now the Ontario College of Teachers has publicly announced that "the teacher shortage is over!" Oh, really? Did it ever even exist? Of course not! The College states that they first warned of the impending shortage' eight years ago and now the problem has been solved! I heard about this projected shortage over 14 years ago, which initially encouraged me into pursuing a teaching career. And I have found not the slightest evidence of it ever since. Having a glut of teachers is always beneficial to an employer, but never to the employee! ------------------------------------------------------------ CLICK BELOW FOR MYTH #2 IN MODERN EDUCATION . . . |
