J.R.R. Tolkien
1892 - 1973
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein, South
Africa. He later moved to England and attended Oxford University.
He became a professor of Anglo-Saxon and specialized in Medieval
Languages. In 1937 he wrote "The Hobbit" and in 1954-1956
published "The Lord of the Rings", the sequel to "The
Hobbit." Tolkien retired from Oxford in 1959 and worked
on the "Silmarillion" until his death in 1973.
