oh oh oh, i just started on some very interesting reading. the past days, i've been doing my pol s 280 (international relations) readings, which were boring like hell, talking about the international political structure. bleah. now, i'm starting on my pol s 260 (political theory) reading, which is so much more interesting. i'm reading plato!

granted, i'm like barely 10 pages into the 55 pages i'm supposed to do, but i really like it. there's talk about justice, about human desires, the pursuit for happiness, the ideal city, wealth, all kind of abtract interesting stuff. here's a few lines i found quite meaningful:

When the appetites relax and cease to importune us, [...] we escape from many mad masters.

which is exactly what i'm talking about. exactly why i'm in state of contentment. btw, that particular line occurred in a speech discussing issues regarding happiness of the elderly, but i think it applied to any individual anyway.

ok, another one.

What else than the appropriate penalty for one who doesn't know, namely, to learn from the one who does know? Therefore, that's what I deserve.

ah, the penalty of learning. i, the ignorant, am glad to accept the penalty of learning, so i will not make the same mistakes again.

most people are quite surprised i'm so excited about my classes. hehe. i think i'm lucky, i have a combination of suitable classes. there's the biomed imaging class that somewhat connects with my past experiences in the radiology department in NUH. the communications class that does the technical stuff to make sure i don't lose my engineering edge. the international relations class for the worldly wisdom and overview in international affairs. the political theory class for my interest in philosophy and the classic "-ism"s. social psychology class for the me who initially wanted to study psychology in university. and lastly, the one i've been looking forward to, japanese.

ah, yes, today we learnt other greeting like ohaiyoo gozaimasu and konbanwa which i already know. but the class was so funny, we went up to the front in pairs to practise the greetings, where my teacher flashed cards that told of the relationship [so we decide if to use the formal form] and the time of the day [so we decide which greeting to use]. the card that says afternoon showed lunch consisting of a packet of fries and coke. oh, and remember the bowing! hahaha...it was quite fun.

i don't know, is it boring for me to talking about my classes everyday like this? hmm. i just think i learn some interesting things everyday. i'm so glad...this is what i have always intended my education to be.
