U.M.N.
The U.M.N. (Unus Mundus Network) has two roles. The first one is, and I quote, "traffic infrastructure via leaps in space". Basically, interstellar space travel. The second role is "an information source that uses a large decentralized network system". Basically, the internet. You don't really get to use the first feature; the game takes care of that automically. So when I refer to the U.M.N., I refer to the information source.

Connection Gear

Much like a computer needs a modem or network card to connect to the internet, you need special hardware to connect to the U.M.N.. This hardware is called "Connection Gear". Shion starts the game with the RIOS 680RR, a new Connection Gear made by vector.

Procurator

That's what they call the little guy that helps you around the U.M.N.. Yours is a little bunny, isn't that cute?! Anyway, he'll explain things and offer advice every now and then. He can also help you apprehend a criminal, if you respond to e-mails correctly.

Plug-ins

Plug-ins can be used with your connection gear to do different things, like recieve e-mail. You start the game with the Mail Plug-in, which allows you to recieve e-mail. You recieve more plug-ins as you advance through the game. Here is a list of all the available plug-ins:

Mail

Read and reply to e-mail. You also download attachments from e-mail here as well. Only e-mails I deem important are listed here. But all e-mails I encounter that appear to be location based will be listed in the walkthrough- though the appearance of e-mail seems to be a bit random, and may depend on how you respond to previous e-mails- so you may have different experiences.

The Ultimate Weapon Befitting KOS-MOS

While aboard the Woglinde you should recieve an e-mail from Miyuki asking you to help develop a weapon for KOS-MOS. I'm not sure if your help actually affects whether or not KOS-MOS will recieve the weapon later in the game, but it doesn't hurt to help. So reply with "I Read Your Secret Email".
Later you will receive an e-mail with the plug-in Sprinkle attached. Download the attachment to install the plug-in.

Apprehending the intruder

These e-mails seem to appear at random, though I think their appearances might be related to how long you've been playing the game. Anyway, at some point you should recieve an e-mail asking for your assistance in catching a criminal who is hacking into Vector systems and using their resources. Respond with the option "I Will Help You". Some time later you will receive another e-mail entitled "Tracking Cooperation Request". You can't reply to it, but it gives you a bit more information. Later you'll receive another e-mail entitled "Intruder Confirmed". Shion will then attempt to locate the intruder; but because the intruder logs off three seconds too soon, Shion is unable to pinpoint his location. However, she is immediately sent another e-mail entitled "List of Suspect Locations", which gives three places where the intruder is likely to be. You must decide which location is correct, and reply. The e-mail says that Asteroid Lutz is the most likely location; however, I think the correct location is a Cargo Ship on Asteroid Lutz. So reply with the third choice, "Cargo Ship Seems Suspicious".

Database

Here you can view 3D images of the Gnosis you have encountered. You can also look up keywords that come up in conversation that you aren't familiar with. I think it is pretty much impossible to completely understand the game without using this function- so take advantage of it- especially if you find yourself having no clue about what in the world is going on.

Sprinkle

A client which enables multi-array computing. Manufactured by Magnelli Systems, Inc.
Saved from an attachment sent to you by Miyuki. It is used to help compute data for the weapon Miyuki and Boris are developing for KOS-MOS.

EVS (Environmental Simulator)

Environmental Simulator client. Manufactured by Vector Industries, Inc.
Received during the Elsa Part I, it allows you to use the environmetal simulator. Essentially, it allows you to go back to different parts of the game so you can collect items that you may have missed, or fight enemies.
