What exactly is a sorority/fraternity for anyways?
The simple answer is it is a group of people with similar ideals gathering together. Unfortunately the greek system isn't that simple, It becomes a family. You become a part of a larger picture, and you can better yourself through networking and philanthropy. As the saying goes: "From the outside looking in, you can't understand it; from the inside looking out you can't explain it."
What is a little or big?
It is a type of sister. In a greek organization you get a little or big sister. Your job as a big sister is to guide your little sister through the association process, and through the rest of her life. We are indeed a family.
What is a Chapter?
A chapter is a small piece in a big puzzle. Many chapters make up one organization. Usually each chapter is a different school.
What is a Colony?
A colony is the step before becoming a chapter. Where you aren't quite a whole, but you're almost there.
What is a National?
A national is a head unit that helps run an organization. They usually provide insurance for members and help when a chapter is stuck in a bind. Also a national generally has many members and chapters so the social network is larger.
What is a Local?
A local organization just means that they have no national backing. They essentially run themselves. Of course they still have to abide by federal laws and school rules and still participate in the same things other national sororities do.
Why would I want to join a sorority?
Many people start off not interested in a sorority, some look forward to joining one their whole lives. Every person is different and has their own opinions, hence the reason why there are so many different sororities and fraternities to join. More or likely anybody can find a sorority to fit their own personality if you look. A sorority gives you the advantage of new opportunities you might not have had otherwise. You gain new friends, a new family, and the ability to help others more so than you would have alone.
Why are you wearing different letters than your national in some photos?
We just joined our national in May 2006. Even though we are very happy to be with them many of our photos are from before we joined them. Hence our old letters in some the pictures.
Why did you change?
The University had been pushing all of the greeks on campus to be national for insurance reasons. We are the last to go national because of our good standing with the University so we were able to take our time deciding. Our alumni knew that joining a national was something we would have to do in the future and that it would benefit the sorority as a whole. Over time it was narrowed down to Kappa Delta Phi NAS. However the jump to officially join didn't happen until this year. Kappa Delta Phi NAS' ideals and missions statement sounded so similar to Alpha Sigma that we knew we had made the right choice, they also allowed us to keep our local history along with the Kappa history.
What does NAS mean anyway?
NAS means National Affiliated Sorority. Meaning we are associated with a national fraternity. Kappa Delta Phi fraternity was formed in 1900 and helped establish Kappa Delta Phi NAS in the 70's for women who believed in the same ideals as the men. We associate ourselves with them, and even have conventions with them but we are also our own functioning sorority, the NAS distinguishes us from the fraternity. Kind of complicated, we know.
But I thought greek organizations were just for partying!
Unfortunatly the days of old portrayed greeks as party animals that did nothing but drink and cause trouble. In reality we have to work hard to be active members of a greek organization. You have study hours to complete, a grade point average to maintain, you may have positions in the organization that takes up your time, meetings, sisterhoods, volunteer work, get togethers with other greeks, fundraising, campus events, and MUCH more.
Just remember, in order to play hard you must work hard.
I just started as a freshman, can I join a greek organization?
According to the University you must complete 15 credit hours before being able to associate a greek organization. However in the meantime you can attend recruitment events and get a feel for the groups around you so you are well prepared for next semester.
Whats up with your mascot? A crow?
Crows are very intelligent and innovative animals. They have problem solving skills that most creatures in the animal kingdom do not have, they have the freedom of wings. The crow posseses qualities that our sorority reflects.
As us ladies say; "crows never fly alone." It is almost impossible to see one sister without at least one more close by.
