History Of The Akita
The evolution of the akita remains in a shroud of mystery.
According to the Japanese history, the Akita was an ancestor of the Matagi-Inu, which means hunting dog.
The Akita did not get it's official name until 1939 when it was designated a Natural Monument by the government of Japan.
It is however, generally accepted that the modern day Akita was developed in Akita Prefecture, in the northern part of Honshu Island, Japan. This was a remote area surrounded by towering mountian ranges.
The Akita is an acknowledged and skilled hunter, but not a specialist. He has been used successfully on both feather and fur, especially for wild pigs and bears. A special language was even developed in Japan called "dog-words" when speaking to or about the dogs.
The Akita is astonishngly capable of defending himself and more to the point, he will seek to establish dominance over other other animals with which he lives. Akita owners must always be aware of this and be constantly vigilant over their dogs and possible changes in his behaviour. Obedience training for these dogs is not an option, it is a necessity.
