My Faith

I confess...I am not good, religion-wise. I am what you might call an undulating Christian. Sometimes I am on fire for faith, sometimes I pretty much forget that its there. I suppose you could really call me a maybe/don't know with Judaeo-Christian leanings.

I do believe in God. But not in a going out and proclaiming it everywhere sort of way. Sometimes, I think that is a good thing - as Robert Pirsig said:"You are never dedicated to something you have complete confidence in. No one is fanatically shouting that the sun is going to rise tomorrow. They know it's going to rise tomorrow. When people are fanatically dedicated to political or religious faiths or any other kinds of dogmas or goals, it's always because these dogmas or goals are in doubt." I suppose you could say I have no doubt as such, but no conviction either.

About Christianity as such - I think it is a beautiful religion. I do think it has caused harm, many, many times, as indeed it has. But I am not the same as those who burned witches, nor am I the same as those who burned heretics, who burned the books of the Greek philosophers, as those who today spread hatred for people of different religions and for those of differing sexualities. I am not and could never be a fundamentalist. It is beyond my comprehension - as it is for most people in Britain, I suspect. 'Live and let live' is pretty much my motto.

Heaven and hell do not worry me. I am sure there is an afterlife - perhaps because I am frightened of death (aren't we all) and I am sure that I will meet my grandmother, and my sisters there when I reach it. I am not worried about judgement - I live a good life, and I believe. I try to love my neighbour. The greatest statement of the Bible, the true heart of Christianity and what I believe, comes from the first epistle of John:

Beloved, let us love one another; for love is of God, and he who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God; for God is love. (1 John 4:7-8)

In essence, that is what I believe. Now those are my personal beliefs, and the purpose of this section is to highlight my opinions on religion, I suppose, and I will also be placing the writings of others on this page, if I agree with them. You'll discover I have quite a few opinions about religion, different types of it as well. Some of it may not be to everyone's taste, some of it I may come to disagree with myself! But they are what I think, nevertheless.
