What a cutie - at 4 weeks old
I had a fascination with 'different' animals for pets and decided I wanted a pig.  I got Socrates for my birthday as a 4 week old piglet.  He was the cutest little thing.  I knew pigs were intelligent creatures so I wanted an intelligent name - Socrates it was.
As he got older and stronger and dug deeper and further, it became more difficult to keep him in pens, but I somehow managed.  He loved to burrow in mud and I buried an old bath in the ground for him.  This eventually became a mud bath and he would wallow in it for hours.  I took him to the vet on  a leash when he was 3 months old and got him desexed.   On looking back this was probably a mistake as he soon became huge.
Socrates was the most intelligent and loyal animal I have owned.  Much like a dog.  He would sleep outside my bedroom window at night when I let him out of my pen.  Being woken big a huge snoring pig is something else!!  I used to let him out of his pen in the afternoon and he'd wander the pony club grounds.  He'd come running home when I called him for dinner.  The sight of a huge pig running and grunting across a paddock was fantastic.
He genuinely loved people and would make a huge noise when people came to visit which was quite intimidating if you weren't used to him.  If he went quiet around a person, it meant he really didn't like them and they'd better watch out.
His favourite foods were tomatoes, pumpkin and watermelon.  He didn't like citrus fruits or onions.   I never had a problem getting riding of scrap food with him around.  When I eventually moved from the pony club property in Berrimah, back into suburbia, I gave him away to a family in Darwin River.  I hope he has never ended up on anyone's table.
