After Jesus became a grown man, and the news of His miracles and teachings spread far and wide, He was hated by the governor, Pilot.  Pilot ordered that Jesus be captured and killed.

Jesus, knowing that He was soon to die, prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane.  He asked God to take away the death sentence if it was His will.  But the plan was made, and Jesus was to die.  Jesus had to carry all the sins of the world in Him so that when He died, He would shed His blood for us.  This would save us from sin and make a way for us to enter into Heaven when we die.
Jesus was brought before Pilot, and the soldiers put a crown of thorns upon His head and caused His head to bleed.  They made fun of Him and whipped Him, and tried to get Him to say that He did not perform miracles and that He was not the Son of God.
Jesus could not lie because He was the Son of God, and He had performed miracles.  Pilot condemned Jesus to death.  He was made to carry a heavy cross upon his back.  He carried the cross, with the help of a man named Simon, a long way up a hill called Golgotha, to a place called Calvary. After He reached the top, He was nailed to the cross.   A long spike was driven into each hand and both feet to hold Jesus on the cross.  Then the soliders pierced His sides so that the blood ran freely.
