Family Values

Work! Work! Work! In the mid-eighties, that seemed to be all we cared about. Everybody worked two jobs, because they had to have the biggest house, the best car, the latest furniture, the most up to date electronic equipment, and top designer clothes. Nobody seemed to notice, that while they were living in luxury, they were also the most unhappy they had ever been. The divorce rate had never been higher, and families were literally torn apart trying to achieve the perfection they thought they were striving for. Tragedy. Now, thanks to those days, there are thousands of single mothers, struggling for survival, being blamed for all the country’s problems, when they had only been doing what the government told them to do. (You’ll notice they never blamed the fathers who abandoned their families, always the mothers who stayed behind to care for the children.) Most of those yuppies, are now living alone in tiny bed-sits, trying to work out where they went wrong. What happened to their family? How did we lose our family values, and is there a way to get it back? Probably not. It’s too late now for many families, but hopefully now, we have learned from those mistakes, and can prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.

Family Values.
By Amanda Jay Clark.

Why are we all in such a rush these days,
Desperate for control and power?
Working all day for a few dollars pay,
With a bonus every overtime hour.
Why can’t we take time to stand still,
To breathe in some clean fresh air?
Take time to be with our loved ones,
While we still have loved ones there!
Why do we measure a persons success,
By the size of their house and car?
Why is their bank balance more important,
Than how nice a person they are?
Seems these days we worship money,
And the possessions it can gain,
Much more than we care for our family.
I think that’s really insane!
I know money brings peace of mind,
But it can’t bring you peace of heart.
Only kids and partners can do that,
Time together’s a good place to start.
So after you’ve done your eight hours,
Go home to the old kith and kin.
You may not have quite so much money,
But your family’s guaranteed to win!
We all need more time together,
Teaching kids right from wrong.
Learning to love each other,
Discovering how to get along.
When we get back to family values,
With love and honour our main affairs,
No matter how poor we are on the outside,
Inside, we’ll all be millionaires.
