Christmas Is Hard Work For Mothers

This is my version of "A Woman’s Work Is Never Done." I love Christmas, but sometimes I have to ask myself if it’s really worth all the hard work. The answer is always the same of course. Yes!!! Boxing day is my busy day. That’s when my family descend on me, and I find myself doing exactly what this poem says. I am not a mother, but the task is no less fun, and definitely no less hard work! This is dedicated to hard working mothers everywhere. Do you have a favourite holiday experience that you would like me to write about?

Christmas Is Hard Work For Mothers.
By Amanda Jay Clark.

Christmas is hard work for mothers.
No time to join in the fun.
With all the family gathering,
There’s way too much work to be done.
She starts preparation months beforehand.
Buying presents, food and drink.
Spending money as if it was water,
Not bankrupt, but brought to the brink.
She writes all the cards and wraps all the gifts,
Then she decorates the tree.
Hangs home made streamers all over the house,
To add to the gaiety.
She bakes mince pies and rich fruit cake,
Plum pudding and chocolate logs.
No time to rest with her feet up.
For endless hours she slogs.
She makes gallons of giblet gravy,
Sausage meat stuffing in a breadcrumb mound.
Puts hand to elbow up the turkeys bum,
Shoving in sage and onion by the pound.
A net full of sprouts need peeling,
And potatoes for mashing and roast.
Then she serves it all up on warm dishes,
While she acts as the perfect host.
There’s the wine to be opened and served,
And Christmas grace to say,
Before she finally sits at the table,
For her merry Christmas day.
But as she watches the family tuck in,
Laughing and having a ball,
She can at last relax and enjoy herself.
It was worth the hard work after all!
