        JOSEPHINE BAKER

    (1906-1975 St. Louis, Missouri)

Josephine Baker was the first and greatest dancer to emerge in the genre called performance art.  She epitomized through dance what freedom of expression and artistic expression really meant for generations of artists worldwide.  In 1925, she went to Paris and became a sensation in the American production of 'LA REVUE NEGRE" symbolizing the quintessential exotic black woman.  She performed as an exotic dancer in The Follies -Bergere and The Casino de Paris. Josephine Baker received France's highest honor, "The Legion of Honor" for her life long commitment to the Arts and The Humanities.
