As a model and actress, I get asked questions all the time from people who are interested in a career in the fields. Here are some of the questions I've been asked and answers to them according to my own personal experiences. Q: Do you have to be a certain height or weight to model? A: Absolutely not! There is all types of modeling. From commerical print to high fashion to plus size modeling. Just about anyone can be a model. Q: Do I need to pay a fee to be accepted into a modeling or talent agency? A: Of course not. The only thing you should ever pay for is pictures. Even so, if a talent agent feels you would be great for their agency, they would even be willing to pay for your pictures until they get you work to pay it off. Q: How do you become a member of SAG (Screen Actors Guild)? A: There is no one certain way. Some people may have connections and know the right people. But for those of us who actually have to work for it, if you are featured on a televison show, movie or commerical under a SAG contract, you are entitled to a SAG voucher. After receiving three vouchers, you are then elegible to join the Screen Actors Guild. Another way is auditioning and landing a role on a commerical, televsion show or movie under SAG jurisdiction. Although this very rarely happens for most, it is possible and guarentees you eligiblity into the Guild. Q: I want to get into modeling, but I don't have pictures or a portfolio book? A: While most agencies don't expect first time models to have proffessional pictures and may only ask for poloroids, there are ways to get pictures without having to spend money. There are photographers who are willing to shoot you for free and give you a CD from your shoot. This way he is able to build his book as well. This is called a TFC. A great website for this is www.onemodelplace.com. Q: Do I need to take classes to be an actor? A: Classes are a great way of learning the craft. If an agent is interested in signing you, but feel you may need a little work, they may suggest you take classes. But some people are just naturals and have never taken a class. Either way, if you feel confident and comfortable enough to audition for something and have never taken a class go for it! Q: I don't have an agent yet. What can I do in the meantime? .A: Promote and Network!!! Remember promoting yourself is the best way to gain exposure in any field. Go to castings, build a website, link to other sites in affliation and attend events! *visit my links page for more helpful links. |
