Sledding... Southwest Style!!!
We went to Cloudcroft and White Sands for Columbus Day Weekend. Here are some pictures at White Sands National Monument(or is it Park? hmm). It's the world's largest gypsum field. The sand grains are very fine, so a waxed saucer is all you need to sled down.
To the left, we have Dad and Benjamin trying out the sled. Benjamin's afraid to go by himself.
To the right is Nathaniel and Benjamin having a whirl at it.
Benjamin's idea of sliding is to go down on his belly. Not quite so fast, and of course the added benefit of pants full of sand!
Nicholas watches while thinking to himself, "Are they crazy???" Then he remembers, "Of course they are! They're my family!"
Nathaniel wipes out!
Cooling off in the sand! It was actually a very hot day, but we wore sleeves and pants to protect against sunburn. Unfortunately, the heat brought us close to heatstroke. The sand is actually very cold only an inch or two under the surface. It's also rather damp, and sticky, and gets into everything, so Mom and Nicholas passed and went home happy to be grit-free!
Just to give some perspective, these are the dunes we sledded and played on. Those specks on the hill are Nathaniel and Benjamin and that's our 15-passenger van.
