The BITS Emblem. |
Among my friends are my wingies (people with whom I share a particular block or "wing" of the hostel in which I live) and my Department mates. You can find more information about my wingies here. I am in the Department of Photography (DOPY). DOPY takes snaps for all cultural events that happen in BITS. It is one of the biggest sources of revenue for the Students' Union.
Life in BITS, Pilani was one big roller-coaster ride. You can be on a huge high at one moment, and at an abysmal low the next. Life surely is exciting here. Attendance to classes is highly low. Because there is no such thing as attendance! (at least, I could claim so for 3/4ths of my BITSian life.) There is a lot of options for someone intending to do stuff other than academic work. You can join any one of a myriad assortment of Departments, Clubs, Assoc's etc. They will ensure you are fully busy for the majority of a semester!
People from all over the country come to study in BITS, so you get to meet all kinds of people. In my own wing (a segregated portion of the hostel), there are guys from 8 different states! So you can rest assured that national integrity's integrity is maintained here.
It is customary for almost everyone in BITS to have an appellation for use in BITS, which may differ from the real one. This name is, again, customarily given by seniors, and in some cases, by batchmates. It might be because of a personal quirk (like corpulence/height/nose-picking etc.), or a pronounced love-interest (in girls/guys/sports etc.), and so on. Whatever be the reason, a popular BITSian name sticks to one for good. He/she is identified mainly by it, and in many cases, the original name might not be remembered, even by close friends! Here are some sample BITSian names:
| Original Name | BITSian name | Reason for the BITSian name |
|---|---|---|
| Shashank | Segu | Supposed savant of the prurient arts. |
| Sankara Narayanan | Y-axis | His (hardly) one dimensional physique! |
| Deepak Ramachandran | Ditch | Well, as dirty as a ... full of shit! |
| One in every 10 gults | Posh | a grand lifestyle? |
"... to promote the culture of Karnataka by providing a platform for BITSian Kannadigas to relive the memories of their homeland and introduce their rich heritage to others."Sadly, it looks like nothing to that effect is happening now. Srikrishna (1998A7PS018), one of my seniors, was instrumental in activating this organization after a long period of hibernation... but now, the organization has sunk into a slumber... In our time, we had even cooked up a Constitution for the Association! You can have a look at the activities in Kannada Vedike in our time. The highlights of our time were the Kannada plays that we directed and enacted. Another event that Kannada Vedike undertook with great enthusiasm was the KV Grub. The idea was to introduce people in BITS to the delicacies of Karnataka cuisine. But both times we staged this event, it turned out to be a fiasco. Still, you might want to have a look at the range of delicacies that were on the KV Grub menu (yummm!!!).
