"Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword." (
Mat. 10:34)

"Jesus entered the temple area and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves." (
Mat. 21:12)

"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites!" (see all of
Mat. 23)

"Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him." (
John 3:36)

"The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness." (
Rom. 1:18)

"But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God's wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed." (
Rom. 2:5)

"Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient." (
Eph. 5:6)

"Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.  Because of these, the wrath of God is coming." (
Col. 3:5-6)

"In this way they always heap up their sins to the limit. The wrath of God has come upon them at last." (
1 Thes. 2:16)

"God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you  and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels.  He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.  They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the majesty of his power." (
2 Thes. 1:6-9)

"Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and every slave and every free man hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains.  They called to the mountains and the rocks, 'Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb!  For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?'" (
Rev. 6:15-17)

Of course, the whole purpose of the New Testament is to show an incredible act of love on God's part: the sacrifice of his son. The Old Testament sets the stage for this by revealing just how much we need God. Jesus also said that The Old Testament may be summed up by the commandment to love God and to love our neighbors (
Mt.22:37). He also said that God (in The Old Testament) wanted love and mercy from us, not sacrifice (Mt.9:13; 12:7).

Therefore we find that
both Testaments show both God's gentle love and his disciplinary love.
