| after ayutthuya, we headed down south the malaysia via the spiffily named International Express. we booked sleeping berths (as the trip was 23 hours) which was great fun. definitely better than riding a bus, which would have taken the same amount of time. the thai country side was gorgeous. we arrived at butterworth, then took the 15 minute ferry to pinang. after the sprawl of bangkok, pinang felt small and comfy, and we had a nice walk around in the afternoon. the next day, we went to the famous beach called 'foreigner's rock' , but it wasn't that impressive, so we decided to move on. if we'd had more time, it would have been nice to wander around the streets of georgetown longer. there were loads of old chinese buildings and you could almost feel the history. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| morgan finally got to test out his swanky new rain jacket. behind him is one of the ubiquitous food-hawker stalls. we were initially wary (health standards and all) but were soon lured by the cheap prices and delicious smells. turned out to be one of the best things about malaysia- amazing food and ridiculously low prices. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| an action shot of me climbing into bed. beneath me was this dodgy shirtless french man who got off the train right before the border (and customs), then reboarded a few stops later. hmm.... | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| an example of the architecture in georgetown. the historical district is pretty run down, and it's a stark contrast with all the beach hotels built up for foreign tourists. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
