bali beaches
the second half of our trip was devoted to one thing: finding a good beach on bali.  before we arrived, our image of bali was that it was a tropical paradise, with soft white sand, and clear blue water.  i'll admit that being from hawaii, i'm a bit spoiled, but even a midwesterner would have been disappointed with the 'world famous' kuta beach.  it was grey (on a sunny day) and dirty, and covered with touts.  we heard similar things about the big tourist beach in the north of the island (lovina) but we were still determined to find a nice beach.  in ubud, we met a really nice couple (barclay and ian) who had a similar quest, so the four of us headed north on the advice of the 'prolific' symon (his words) to a small place called air sanih.  true to symon's words, air batang was free of tourists, but there wasn't much of a beach, so after one night there, we headed to the east of the island and a small village called padang bai.  we hiked over a hill to 'small beach' practically holding our collective breaths.  this was pretty much our last chance, as morgan and i were leaving in 3 days.  well...  check out the pictures, and see what we found... :)

at last!!! our perfect little slice of beach.  bali does have nice beaches after all!  can you imagine the collective sigh of relief as we hiked down from hill?
padang bai is primarily a fishing village (which meant  AMAZING meals while we were there).  this is an example of their traditional canoes.  that's been one of the coolest things about travelling in SE asia- seeing all the different ways cultures have constructed outrigger canoes.

morgan, proving that empty beaches do exist in bali.
