Lesson Plan Discussion Paper

I chose to do a lesson in the veterinary assistant program. As a prospective teacher I have put a lot of thought into this assignment. This is the assignment in which I will get to apply and practice my teaching skills. I was asked by a teacher to do this particular lesson plan because of my background in the veterinary medicine. I was also asked to do this because I have my Associates Degree in this particular field of study. I am excited to be able to apply all the skills I have learned and to be able to finally get to do hands-on activities and teach the students techniques they may not be familiar with.

I intend to get the students interest by first showing them a live dog and then tying the live dog into the mannequin they will be performing blood draws on. Also I feel that this will be an exciting skill for these students to learn. Most schools do not have the materials to provide the students the opportunity to do an activity like this and I feel fortunate to be able to provide these materials, as well as skills. I will demonstrate what the students are supposed to do as a whole on a live animal. I will then bring two students up at a time and demonstrate what it is they need to do as a whole on the mannequins. After I have done the demonstration I will allow them the opportunity to draw blood on the mannequin. The two emoments were incorporated into my lesson was to help insure that each student is able to understand and be able to perform the activity. I used the Little Professor Moment because we all are able to learn and remember what we learn when we have to teach it to someone. The other emoment I used was Show What You Know Moment.

I will have each student complete a hands-on performance test to evaluate the skills they have learned. Oral questions will be asked at the end of class to help determine the level of understanding at the completion of my lesson. I feel that the demonstration on the live dog, the handout that goes over restraint and techniques, along with the peer teaching, and the performance test will all be building blocks for each student. The oral test given at the end of class will help to reinforce the material.

I have some fears and concerns regarding my lesson plan. I want to make sure that everything goes right and that the students will actually learn and understand the points that I plan on getting across to them. I also want the students to enjoy the lesson and not get bored with my teaching or the material covered. I feel this assignment will benefit me in the future because I will know what it feels like to write a lesson plan and actually teach the lesson. Most of all I feel that this assignment has given me a jump on my student teaching experience. Doing something for the first time is always challenging for me because I don’t know what to expect. I am hoping that after this lesson is carried out, I will get a better feel for a classroom and what I am up against. I will seek out positive feedback and constructive criticism so that I can improve in any areas that I lack. I will be able to take the constructive criticism and learn from it so that I can become a better teacher. I know that every experience I get I need to take advantage of, because this is my foundation in which I will only become better.

TEACHING MATERIALS AND RESOURCES (What do you need to bring?)

TEACHING PROCEDURES---Preparation, Presentation, Application, Evaluation

Preparation (Interest Approach/Motivator)                              Anticipated # of Minutes

Key Points

Methods         5 minutes

Link

  • Show a live dog.

Motivation

  • Who has ever had their blood drawn?
  • Have you ever taken your pet to the vet and watched the vet or technician draw blood?
  • Relate blood drawing to the mannequin. By letting the students fine the live dogs vein and then let the students touch the vein on the mannequin.

Overview

Today we will…..

  • Discuss the techniques of blood collection and how important they are.
  • Complete a handout on proper blood collection.
  • Teach others how to properly restrain a dog for a blood draw.
  • Perform a blood draw on a cephalic and jugular vein.

Presentation (The Meat!)                                                  Anticipated # of Minutes

Key Points

Methods        15 minutes

  • Who knows what the cephalic and jugular veins are? Do you know where the cephalic and jugular veins are located on an animal? Has anyone ever drawn blood from an animal before?

  • Point out the cephalic and jugular veins on the live dog.

  • The students will watch demonstration of proper restraint on a live animal for a blood draw.

  • The students will watch demonstration of the proper blood draw on live animal.

Ask a series of questions to see how familiar the class is with this topic.

Demonstrate on live dog

Demonstrate of Restraint

(See picture on handout & on live dog)

Demonstrate Blood Collection. (See picture on handout & on live dog)

Application (What will they do with what you taught?)           Anticipated # of Minutes

Key Points

Methods       20 minutes

  • Each group will be given a handout over blood draws in either a cephalic vein or a jugular vein. Each group will be responsible for reading and knowing the proper techniques of that particular blood draw.

  • One group at a time will be assisted by the instructor in drawing blood from the cephalic and jugular vein.

  • The groups with the handouts on the jugular vein will be responsible to find a group that has a handout on the cephalic vein. Little Professor Moment: Once you the students have found the opposite group they will be asked to teach one another the proper technique to perform each skill. (blood drawing and restraint)

  • Perform the blood draw. First they will-Show What You Know Moment: The group of four students will be asked to come up and to teach the skill hands-on.  The two students who had the cephalic vein handout will teach the students who had the handout on the jugular vein how to perform the skill and vise versa. The students will be able to practice a few times and then will be evaluated.

Evaluation/Summary (How do you know they learned it?)Anticipated # of Minutes

Key Points

Methods      10 minutes

  • What veins did we be draw blood from today?

  • Can anyone name other veins that could be used?

  • Why should we think about using a jugular vein on an animal that does not have good clotting factors?

  • What are a few things that may cause an animal not to clot properly?

  • What are the proper techniques for drawing blood?

  • How do you properly restrain a dog for venipuncture.

  • Next class we will practice your techniques for blood drawing and you will learn about some important blood test that are done in the vet office.
