Shamrocks do well against All-Ireland stars 26 April 2000 - International Gaelic Football came to Queensland on Anzac Day and Brisbane western suburbs' Shamrocks players shone amongst a star-studded cast at Willawong yesterday. The touring Allied Irish Bank selection - made up of some of the best inter-county players in Ireland - won the match, but both the Shamrocks Club and Queensland selectors are taking encouragement from good home team performances. Eagleby's Dan Fraser - last year's best first year player in Queensland - acquitted himself well at the pivotal position of centre half back in his debut representative performance. Adrian Darbellay from River Hills, with 3 goals and 20 points from his four career matches for Shamrocks, moved from corner back to the forwards in the second half to score two points. Shamrocks' third representative, Tyrone import Stephen Mulligan of Forest Lake, also scored a point in a solid display for Queensland. The Irish team dominated the first half with inter-county stars and All-Ireland medal winners Enda Gormley of Derry and Kerry's legendary Pa Laide leading the way, supported by Mayo's Stephen Rochford. The Irish eventually won a thoroughly entertaining match by 13 points, 4-11 (23) to 0-10 (10), to remain undefeated on tour having already beaten Auckland, Victoria and New South Wales. Now only Singapore remains. In the Hurling, Queensland and Irish players were mixed into two teams to give an outstanding display of the traditional Irish game. Shamrocks' Brian MacDonagh of Chapel Hill played well in the game that also included some of the current stars of inter-county Hurling in Ireland. Outstanding players included Galway's Declan O'Brien, Niall Butler of Dublin, and Waterford's Stephen Frampton. The Shamrocks senior mens team slumped to their third consecutive loss - their worst losing streak in three years - with a 12-point loss to Souths, despite Stephen Mulligan of Forest Lake playing well for 1 goal 1 point. However, the Brisbane western suburbs club remained undefeated in the reserve mens competition, with a well-earned two-point win over Souths, paced by Acacia Ridge's Robbie White with 1 goal 2 points. Last year's best and fairest player, Brent Nolan of The Gap, returned from Rockhampton for a solid game. Queensland facing All-Ireland stars 15 April 2000 - Queensland Gaelic Football may boast as many as three Shamrocks players in the squad to face a star-studded Irish touring team at Gaelic Park at Willawong on Anzac Day.
The touring Irish team, representing the strong Allied Irish Bank club, boasts a stunning football panel of current Irish County stars. Leading the tourists is captain Stephen Stack and County Kerry teammate Pa Laide, Enda Gormley from Derry, and John Gildea of Donegal (pictured). The Irish are playing games in Auckland, Melbourne and Sydney before the Anzac Day match in Brisbane, and finish the tour in Singapore. The Allied Irish Bank club last toured Australia in 1989. Shamrocks' 22-year-old Darbellay, in just his first year of Gaelic Football, has 2 goals and 16 points after just three games in the Queensland league so far this season. Four Shamrocks played for Queensland mens team at the Australasian Gaelic Games last year, winning an historic first international encounter against Singapore. The Shamrocks club, based in Brisbane's western suburbs, itself is planning to tour Ireland with a mens and ladies team next year. A Queensland Hurling selection on April 25th will also play a sensational Irish Hurling team that boasts current Waterford star Stephen Frampton, and Kieran Kingston - an All-Ireland Medal winner with Cork. Both the Hurling and Gaelic Football matches are played at Gaelic Park, Bowhill Road, Willawong, on Tuesday 25th April, with the Hurling starting at 1:30pm and Gaelic Football at 3:15pm. Extremes leave Shamrocks searching 10 April 2000 - A mixed weekend of extremes has left the Shamrocks Club searching for consistency in the Queensland Gaelic Football League. The Shamrocks ladies team remains undefeated after scoring their highest goal tally for 12 months by beating John Mitchels by 45 points at Willawong on Sunday. Brookfield's Jacqueline Peacock scored a career-high 3 goals 8 points, while Louise O'Neill of Forest Lake was deadly with 4 goals 1 point. Shamrocks reserve mens team extended its start to a best ever 3-0 win-loss record with an 8-point win over Harps. Acacia Ridge's Robbie White was very good with 1 goal 1 point. Meanwhile in the senior mens division, Shamrocks slumped to it heaviest loss in three years when their four-game winning streak against John Mitchels came to an end thanks to a 19-point loss. Adrian Darbellay from River Hills battled well across the ground, but the absence of key position players due to injury seriously affected structure of the young team. Jindalee's Casey Graham is expected back from injury next week, while Shannon Meibusch of Carina Heights is also hoped to return next week, in time to steady the season start for the Brisbane western suburbs club. Shamrocks grow more young stars 2 April 2000 - Shamrocks keep unearthing more new stars despite mixed results in the Queensland Gaelic Football League at Willawong over the weekend. Young Australians new to the traditional Irish game were again among leading scorers as Brisbane's western suburbs Shamrocks club beat Easts in two of the three games over the weekend. Jodie Jordan from Nundah scored a stunning 4 goals 2 points in her first game, as the Shamrocks ladies team beat Easts by 48 points. Sixteen-year-old teammate Renee Moynihan of Bardon scored 4 goals 3 points in her first game back after a knee reconstruction unrelated to Gaelic football last year. Nundah's Greg McGrath, after a polished debut last week in defence, scored 2 goals in attack as Shamrocks mens reserves beat Easts by four points. Andrew Stevens, 17-years-old from Westlake, scored the other goal for Shamrocks also in just his second game. Adrian Darbellay, 22-years-old from River Hills, scored a sensational 1 goal 8 points on debut last week. He followed that up with another big haul of 1 goal 6 points over the weekend, although that wasn't enough for Shamrocks as they lost to reigning championship winners Easts by just 3 points.
