Reserves roll the oldest records

5 July 2004 - Shamrocks smashed some of the clubs longest standing scoring records in Gaelic Football action at Willawong over the weekend.

While the Brisbane western suburbs club had their senior mens and ladies teams resting on the sidelines this week, the reserve mens team went on a scoring blitzkrieg against Easts Celts, eclipsing team records including some set over six years ago.

Shamrocks won 6-10-28 to Easts Celts 0-3-3, surpassing the teams highest ever score of 20 points set against Souths back in 1998.

The 10 goals beat the record of 4 equaled several times since 1998, and the 25-point winning margin eclipsed the 11-point margin against Souths in the 1999 championship winning season.

Mid-fielder Cameron Carney scored two goals including one from a 50 metre free kick and full-back Matt Walsh pushed forward to also score a brace, for both players to equal the record for most goals in a game.

Shamrocks reserves have now not lost a game for over two months, which is the teams best streak since the 2000 season.

Best players for Shamrocks over the weekend included Mick Joyce, Dave McNeilly, and Cameron Carney.

Full scores:

Shamrocks 6-10-28 (Cameron Carney 2-1, Matt Walsh 2-0, Billy Rockett 1-1, Mick Joyce 1-1, John Mcerlain 0-3, Stuart Miekeljohn 0-2, Matt Mayo 0-1, Harold Peacock 0-1) def Easts 0-3-3

Brazils Claudio stunning in final loss

12 June 2004 - Six Brisbane Shield Finals in seven years translated to four wins and two losses, when Shamrocks were beaten by a better Easts Celts under lights at Willawong on Friday night. Shamrocks regroup at half-time of the 2004 Shield final

Shamrocks trailed by six points at half time, dug deep in the biggest team huddle ever seen at Willawong (see photo), but eventually went down by ten points, 1-5-8 to 1-15-18.

The defending champion Shamrocks grabbed the perfect start when Matt Walsh centred to Brendan Devaney who goaled in the opening minute.

Easts replied however, and from then on only slowed brilliant close-range saves by Shamrocks Brazilian goalkeeper Claudio powered to its first Brisbane Shield in almost a decade.

A missed penalty and a dozen wides by Shamrocks in the second half left the team with little hope, although Matt Mayo he scored a record eight goals from full forward a week earlier was a bright spot at full back.

Brazilian Claudio saved the Shamrocks goals on several occasions Devaney was good, and Claudio (pictured) was outstanding throughout.

We played better than we have in the last couple of weeks, although unfortunately it was not enough, coach James Marshall said. The first half, Easts were the better team. We had the better opportunities in the second half, although we did not make the most of them.

Easts coach Chris Guice was full of praise after the game: The game was played in great spirit, with wonderful Gaelic skills being demonstrated by both teams.

Shamrocks have a proud history in Queensland Gaelic football and are to be congratulated for both their contribution and development of the game. I am sure both our clubs will continue to share great on-field rivalry coupled with the respect we both share for each other and the game, he added.
