Records tumble in scoring blitz

30 May 2004 - Scoring records were smashed as Brisbanes western suburbs Shamrocks won in unprecedented style in the Queensland Gaelic Football League at Willawong over the weekend.

Mayo smashes the goals record

Matt Mayo (pictured) from Indooroopilly doubled the previous Shamrocks individual record for most goals in a game, also surpassing the mark for total score in a game, while his team also beat the team records for most goals and highest score.

Mayo kicked a phenomenal 8 goals, as Shamrocks 12-8-44 defeated Harps 2-6-12 in a record-breaking performance by the senior mens team.

The win snapped the Shamrocks two-game losing streak to open the Queensland League, and shows promising form for next weeks Brisbane Shield final against Easts Celts.

Mayos 8 goals beat the record set by Australasian all-star Peadar McCaffrey in 2001, and equaled by current teammate Brad Kennedy in April.

His total score also beat marks previously held by Irish imports Martin Henry from Meath, and current All-Ireland champion Eoin Mulligan from Tyrone.

Full scores: Shamrocks 12-8-44 (Matt Mayo 8-0, Geoff Lambert 1-1, Scott Walker 1-1, Tony Carberry 1-1, Billy Rockett 1-0, Matt Scandrett 0-2, Paul Rice 0-2, Cameron Carney 0-1) def Harps 2-6-12

In the ladies match, Renee Moynihan, Louise ONeill and Bec Rowley were best for Shamrocks as they were overpowered by Harps, who go into next weeks ladies Brisbane Shield final again John Mitchels as favourite.

Full ladies scores: Harps 10-25-55 def Shamrocks 0-1-1 (Bec Rowley 0-1)

League doldrums ruin a good start

24 May 2004 - Despite booking a place in Gaelic Footballs Brisbane Shield final next month, Shamrocks are in the midst of its worst start to the Queensland League senior mens campaign in at least seven years.

Brisbanes western suburbs club lost to John Mitchels by four points, 1-6-9 to 2-7-13, at Willawong over the weekend to open the League season with a 0-2 win-loss record probably the teams worst start since the dark days of 1997.

We started the game in the same (disappointing) fashion as last week, although we picked up our game from the end of the first half, coach James Marshall said.

Matt Walsh, Mark Curry and Brendan Devaney battled hard and all three scored points for Shamrocks, while Stuart Meiklejohn was the teams sole goal scorer.

In the ladies match, coach Charlie Gallagher was pleased with the effort despite his young team going down to John Mitchels.

We were three players down (but) the whole team played great, he said.

Renee Moynihan, Rebecca Rowley and Louise ONeill all scored for Shamrocks.

A Shamrocks mens team will play a youth side at the Wacol Detention Centre on Saturday 29th May as part of the clubs on-going social support.

The Shamrocks senior mens team bid to defend its Brisbane Shield title when they play in the Shield final for the sixth time in seven years, against Easts Celts on 11th June.

League opens with a crash

17 May 2004 - Shamrocks had secured a berth in the Brisbane Shield final, and strung together some impressive wins, but they were not good enough in the opening match of the Queensland Gaelic Football League at Willawong over the weekend.

Brisbanes western suburbs club was beaten by Easts Celts by three points 3-2-11 to 0-14-14. The margin could have been much more with the heavy deficit in the number of scoring shots.

Completely different to the last couple of weeks, the coach James Marshall of Kenmore said.

The side lacked commitment this week and unfortunately never really clicked, with errors around the field costing the game.

Best players for Shamrocks were Martin Kavanagh, Luke Devitt, and Matt Walsh. Goal scorers were Brendan Devaney with two goals, and Wayne Gallagher one.

It was a different story in the earlier reserves match, where Shamrocks were impressive to earn the better half of a draw.

It was an inspired performance by the reserves team and although it was only a draw, it shows how well we can play and that we have a good chance of doing well for the rest of the season, Marshall said.

For three quarters of the match the forward line was kept open, and players held their positions, but in the closing stanza a loss of positional discipline resulted in two late Easts goals to tie the game.

Best players for Shamrocks were Mick Joyce, Scott Ingram, and Wayne Heley. Goal scorers were Mick Joyce, Billy Rockett, and Tom Quimliven all with one apiece.

The Queensland Gaelic Football League continues for all Shamrocks mens and ladies teams, with the senior mens also playing in the Brisbane Shield final for the sixth time in seven years on June 11.

Saved penalty secures a win

10 May 2004 - A late replacement as goal keeper saved the day as Shamrocks won for the fifth straight time with a narrow victory over Easts Celts in a practice match at Willawong over the weekend.

Brendan Devaney, who took over from keeper late in the game, saved a penalty with about five minutes to go that ultimately saved the game, as Shamrocks won by a solitary point.

Brisbanes western suburbs club edged home 3-5-14 to 2-7-13 which avenged their last loss back in March, which was co-incidentally also a one-point thriller to Easts.

It was a good game - a tight game, but we can play better, coach James Marshall said.

Best players for Shamrocks were penalty hero Devaney, John Collins and David OMalley.

Leading scorers were Mark Curry with 1 goal 2 points, and Martin Kavanagh and Matt Walsh with a goal apiece.

Shamrocks forward Raymond Concar dislocated his shoulder and was kept in hospital overnight. He may not return in time for the Brisbane Shield Final on 11th June.
