Football set to shine under lights

Ground lighting work at Willawong this week 1 February 2003 - Flood lights are set to shine on Gaelic football in Queensland for the first time, and the Shamrocks club will be ready to benefit.

Preliminary work (pictured right) is complete and the huge light poles may be erected as early as this week at the sports Queensland headquarters at Gaelic Park, Willawong.

The historic development is thanks to support from the Queensland Government and Gaelic footballs world governing body, the Gaelic Athletic Association in Ireland.

Shamrocks, a founding club of the Queensland Gaelic Football Association in 1983, will be one of the beneficiaries of the new development as they attract new players for the coming season.

Shamrocks drawing players from across the western suburbs including Bardon, Indooroopilly, Kenmore, Jindalee and Forest Lake train at the Jindalee Recreational Reserve at Wongaburra Street, Jindalee, every Tuesday night from 7:30pm.

New players aged 15-50 are still wanted for mens and ladies teams.

New players should call club president David Duguid on 0421 787 720 or click here to register.

Dave plans another good year

David Duguid and mascot Byron plan the new season 24 January 2003 - When Bardons Dave Duguid turned from soccer to Gaelic football a couple of years ago, he didnt realise how popular the game would become within his own home.

In two short seasons with the Shamrocks Gaelic football club, Dave won the clubs reserves team best and fairest award, represented Queensland at the Australian Gaelic Games, and is now entering his second year as president of one of the states most successful suburban sporting clubs.

As well as that, Daves wife Nicole won the ladies Queensland Championship with Shamrocks in 2001, and his dog Byron is the official club mascot. Nicole did not play last year due to the birth of their first child, Fraser.

Nicole and Fraser are a little publicity shy Im afraid, but yes, Byron is undefeated when hes been wearing his Shamrocks uniform, Dave said this week, while planning for the new season.

The Shamrocks club sign-on is at their training ground at the Jindalee Recreational Reserve, Wongaburra Street, Jindalee, this Sunday 2nd March at 2:00pm.

Training starts on Tuesday 4th March at 7:30pm, and continues every Tuesday throughout the season.

Shamrocks is recruiting new players aged 15 to 50.
