Shamrocks stay on top

30 May 1999 - Shamrocks strengthened their grip on the Queensland Gaelic Football League with a demonstrative 24-point win in the Senior Mens competition at Willawong over the weekend.

The Brisbane western suburbs club boast a perfect 5-0 win-loss record to be the only undefeated team in the league, after thumping Sarsfields 4-14 (26) to 0-2 (2).

Player-coach Steve Talbot from Kangaroo Point was inspirational with 2 goals 3 points in his first outfield display after restricting himself to goalkeeper in previous matches. Dan Fraser of Edens Landing was powerful coming forward from defence, while Durack's Sean McAlinden gained possessions all over the field and even snatched a goal.

In the Senior Ladies league, Shamrocks also remained undefeated with a 6-0 record after their 26-point win over Harps.

Despite the 8-5 (29) to 1-0 (3) scoreline, this was perhaps their toughest outing of the season so far.

Shamrocks relied on Brookfield's Jacqueline Peacock to continually clear the centre and set up scoring opportunities, with Michelle O'Malley of Shailer Park very similarly solid in defence.

Forest Lake's Joann O'Neill played a quality match at full forward scoring two goals amid pressure from Harps.

The Shamrocks mens reserves team went down to Sarsfields despite an outstanding display midfield by veteran Michael Joyce of Westlake. 13-year-old Rorey White from Acacia Ridge impressed in his debut game, ensuring the legendary White name lives on in Queensland football.

Shamrocks this Sunday play John Mitchells in the mens competitions and Sarsfields in the ladies. All matches are played at Willawong.

Miserly Shamrocks keep Mitchells scoreless

23 May 1999 - Shamrocks Ladies may have one of the best defences in competition history, after keeping a clean sheet for the fourth time this season at Willawong over the weekend, to remain undefeated in the Queensland Gaelic Football League.

Shamrocks scored 8 goals 11 points (35) to beat John Mitchells nil. This was the fourth time in five matches this season that Shamrocks have kept their opponents scoreless. Last year they managed the feat just once.

Forest Lake full forward Joann O'Neill returned to form with 2 goals, while Jackie Meehan of Karana Downs scored her first 2 goals of the season. Shamrocks full back Trish McGirl-Duell from Graceville also came forward for her first career goal.

The defensive discipline and positional sense, drilled by Shamrocks player-coach Jacqueline Peacock from Brookfield, has the Shamrocks Ladies boasting a perfect 5-0 win-loss record atop the Queensland league standings. They have also booked themselves a place in the first final of the year, for the Brisbane Shield, in a few weeks time.

This weekend, all Shamrocks teams are in action, with the Senior Mens, Mens Reserves, and Ladies, playing Sarsfields at Gaelic Park, Willawong.

Ogilvie to play despite injury

19 May 1999 - Shamrocks full forward Matt Ogilvie is expected to be available in the next game against Sarsfields despite an injury suffered over the weekend in the Queensland Gaelic Football League.

The Gap's Ogilvie left the field to receive eight stitches to his forehead after a head clash with teammate Harold Peacock of Brookfield against Easts on Sunday. Peacock suffered bruising.

Ogilvie, with 1 goal 6 points, is the second leading scorer for the western suburbs club so far this season.

Shamrocks seniors are the only undefeated team in the Gaelic Football League, with the reserves team also doing well, just one point off the lead.

Shamrocks lead the league

16 May 1999 - Shamrocks are assured of a final appearance for the Queensland Gaelic Football League's first trophy of the season in all three grades, after a perfect three wins from three games at Willawong over the weekend.

Brisbane's western suburbs club went a game clear atop the Mens Seniors ladder, beating Easts - the only other undefeated team in the league - by 4 points.

They will now play Easts in the final of the Brisbane Shield next month.

Jindalee's Casey Graham with 2 points, and Denis Cronin from Dutton Park with a game-high 6 points, were again dominant powers streaming forward from half-forward.

The defining moments of the game included late when Brookfield's Harold Peacock chipped a ground ball to Matt Walsh of Taringa, who sensationally punched the ball into goal to put the Shamrocks 3 points up. Cronin then converted for another point to stretch the lead to 4 points.

And then at the other end, goal keeper Steve Talbot of Kangaroo Point saved brilliantly with his legs to deny a goal. The match was then won.

In the Ladies League, Shamrocks scored their fourth highest total in team history to beat Easts by 42 points.

They only need one more win to complete the first round undefeated, but have already assured themselves of a berth in the Brisbane Shield final next month.

Graceville's Trish McGirl-Duell , Hannah Humphries from Geebung, and Shailer Park's Michelle O'Malley, were solid in defence, and what challange they did receive was constantly rebounded back to the forward line.

Louise O'Neill of Moorooka led the scoring with 4 goals, while Mt Gravatt's Denise McIntosh ventured forward for two very good goals of her own.

Shamrocks made it three wins from three games, with the Mens Reserves handing Easts their first loss of the season, beating them by 5 points.

St Lucia's Stephen Ashwell was outstanding with 1goal 1 point for a match-winning performance. Robbie White slammed home the match-clinching goal.

Shamrocks confirm early favouritism

9 May 1999 - Shamrocks ladies won their biggest challenge of the season so far to be the only undefeated team in the Queensland Gaelic Football League at Willawong on Sunday.

Brisbane's western suburbs Shamrocks downed the only other unbeaten side Souths 4-4 (16) to 2-1 (7) to claim early league favouritism, and move into the box seat for the first round's Brisbane Shield final.

It was a complete team effort, as Shamrocks' syncronised defence contained Souths to win convincingly despite it being their lowest scoring match for 11 months. Shamrocks dominated with 8 scoring shots to 3.

Bardon's Renee Moynihan led Shamrocks with three goals, but it really was a team win as all players made major contributions. And that included Pullenvale goalkeeper Shirley Jensen, full back and captain Trish McGirl-Duell from Graceville, and everyone ahead of them.

Shamrocks play Easts this Sunday as they move seemingly irresistably towards contesting the final of the first trophy of the season, encouraging Queensland mid-fielder and Shamrocks rookie coach Jacqueline Peacock of Brookfield (herself playing a superb defensive game on the weekend).

In the Queensland Senior Mens league, Shamrocks dominated Souths by 8 points to join Easts atop the league ladder with a perfect 3-0 win-loss record.

Again it was a defensive win, with the inspirational back line of Oxley's David Shakhousky, Red Hill's Scott Ingram, and Dan Fraser formerly of St Lucia, continually launching the attack. Taringa's Matthew Walsh played all over his opponent all over the ground.

Benefitting were captain Casey Graham from Jindalee and Dutton Park's Denis Cronin, who converted four points apiece.

In the Mens Reserves, Shamrocks outplayed Souths with 6 scoring shots to 2, but failed to convert sufficient opportunities as they played a draw 0-6 (6) to 2-0 (6).

Brookfield's Harold Peacock and Westlake's Mick Joyce led the scoring with 2 points each. Brent Nolan from The Gap, Stuart Meiklejohn from Corinda, and St Lucia's Stephen Ashwell were amongst the best.

Shamrocks play Easts this Sunday, with the outright lead in the Seniors expected to be determined in the match of the week.

Shamrocks beat perennial rivals

2 May 1999 - Shamrocks beat last year's championship winners John Mitchells to move into joint favouritism in the Queensland Mens Gaelic Football League at Willawong over the weekend.

The Brisbane western suburbs club remain undefeated after coming from behind to dominate Mitchells 1-11 (14) to 2-4 (10). Only inaccurate kicking prevented the margin being even more comfortable.

The simmering rivalry between the two clubs has been intense since Shamrocks won both the Brisbane Shield and Queensland League titles last year, before Mitchells recovered to win the covetted championship.

Oxley's David Shakhousky led Shamrocks defence all day, and was inspirational in the first half as they restricted Mitchells a 1-3 to 1-1 lead with the opposition benefitting from a strong wind advantage.

Shamrocks then went on a second-half blitzkreig, led by from the back and midfield by Kingsholmes' Sean McAlinden and Paul McNally. Ray Concar from Carindale was particularly sensational in the pivotal period, pacing Shamrocks with 5 points, all coming in that second half.

Team captain Casey Graham, from Jindalee, scored the only goal of the day for Shamrocks with a well timed fist in the first half.

Shamrocks now join Easts with a perfect 2-0 win-loss record atop the Queensland Mens Gaelic Football League standings, both teams now sharing the box seat for the first round's Brisbane Shield.

In the reserves, a long tradition was continued with 14-year-old John Carpenter from Oxley making his debut for Shamrocks. With older brother Glenn currently on loan to an Irish club in County Meath, it was left to John to continue an on-field link that started when the club was founded 16 years ago when father Nicholas Carpenter was then a player.

Brookfield's evergreen Don McMillan led Shamrocks with their only score as they went down to John Mitchells in the reserves game.
