Inter-state challenge quashed 26 April 1999 - Shamrocks Gaelic Football Club have suffered a blow to their mid-season scheduling with New South Wales withdrawing from an inter-state challenge planned for Coffs Harbour in June. The Brisbane club were to host Sydney sides Irish-Australians and North Coast in mens and ladies matches in the inaugural Club Challenge Cup on the northern New South Wales coast. But unfortunately, the New South Wales Gaelic Athletic Association were unable to arrange the Sydney draw to accommodate the Queensland request. "It is a great shame that the matches will not go ahead this year," the Shamrocks president, Harold Peacock, said. "We had bus loads of players and supporters ready for the event." New South Wales GAA secretary Colm Bryce advised Shamrocks last week of the sad news. "We always have endeavoured to facilitate anyone who wants to play Gaelic Games, however our program must come first and we cannot accommodate someone from another state," he said. Meanwhile, Shamrocks are enjoying a perfect start to the Queensland Gaelic Football Season, with all three teams undefeated after the opening two weeks of the season. The club's next matches are against probably their biggest rivals, with the Mens Seniors playing John Mitchells on Sunday 2nd May from 3:15pm, and Reserves from 12:45pm. Shamrocks Ladies, fresh from their club record 48-point win over Sarsfields last week, play Souths on Sunday 9th May from 1:30pm. All Queensland Gaelic Football League matches are played at Gaelic Park, Willawong. Shamrocks train at Jindalee AFC on Wednesday nights from 7:30pm. Both the Ladies and Senior Mens teams were very impressive in their victories. The Ladies team played a polished brand of football to completely whitewash their opponents 13-9 (48) to nil. All the team played well, and particularly outstanding were Renee Moynihan (Bardon) at centre-half forward with four goals, Angela Doyle (Camp Hill) in the midfield, Hannah Humphrys (Geebung) in defence and the fabulous O'Neill sisters, Louise and Joann, who up forward contributed 5 goals between them. The Senior Mens team was just as impressive in their opening match of the year defeating Sarsfields 3-16 (25) to 0-2 (2). Strong across the ground, the Shamrocks proved to be too good for their opponents. Denis Cronin (Dutton Park), Paul McNally (Kingsholme) and Sean McAlinden (Kingsholme) were superb in their debuts whilst captain Casey Graham (Jindalee) proved elusive as ever at centre-half forward. Up front, Matthew Ogilvie (The Gap) and Harold Peacock (Brookfield) provided good marking options for the dominant Shamrock midfield, whilst Sam Porter (Taringa) was strong off the bench with two sensational points from acute angles. The Shamrocks Reserves grade team also posted their first victory of the year, but unfortunately it was in a disappointing manner with Sarsfields unable to put enough players on the field and hence forfeiting. - by Sam Porter Editors Note: the Ladies' 48-point winning margin was a new Ladies team record, eclipsing their 45-point defeat of John Mitchells in May last year. Angela Doyle from Camp Hill was outstanding in midfield on debut, as the East Coast Gravel Shamrocks won 5-8 (23) to Harps nil. Harps had combined with Souths last year to win both the League and Champiosnhip titles. Queensland representative Kym Eagle from Mt Gravatt, played in the half back line for the first time, and was exceptional in the attacking defender role. Shamrocks also benefited from what may prove to be the most lethal forward competition in Queensland, with Bardon's Renee Moynihan, Louise O'Neill from Moorooka, and Forest Lake's Joann O'Neill, combining to score four of the teams' five goals. Joann's opening effort may be one of the goals of the season, as she powered through two defenders to blast the ball into goal from a tight angle on the right. Shamrocks Ladies play similarly undefeated Sarsfields at Willawong this Sunday. The Shamrocks Mens teams open their season this Sunday also against Sarsfields. Game times at Willawong are: 11:30am Reserves Men, 12:45 Ladies, 2:00pm Seniors Men. Shamrocks seniors and reserves mens teams have a bye to open the season, leaving the Ladies side to face new team Harps from 2:45pm at Gaelic Park, Willawong. The Shamrocks ladies will create more history that just playing Harps for the first time in full league competition. Brookfield's Jacqueline Peacock (pictured) is expected to start in mid-field for the Shamrocks. In the process the Queensland representative will officially become the first female coach ever appointed in Queensland Gaelic Football history. Sisters Louise O'Neill from Moorooka, and Forest Lakes' Joann O'Neill, are expected to again be Queensland's best forward combination. Louise is in fact Queensland's only two-time Australasian ladies representative, and will be fresh from celebrating her 21st birthday the night before the big Harps game. Shamrocks, based in Brisbane's western suburbs and training at Jindalee, are Queensland's biggest and most successful Gaelic Football club, with Ladies, Mens Seniors and Reserves teams, and an Under 14 squad. The Shamrocks are leading the recent growth in Ladies football, with a huge influx of new players from across Brisbane's westside. There are six ladies clubs in Queensland - Shamrocks, Harps, John Mitchells, Sarsfield, Souths, and Easts - in only the second year of full ladies league competition.
