Roscommon scorers edge Shamrocks in front

15 July 2002 - Shamrocks have Ireland's County Roscommon to thank for keeping them in second place in the Queensland Gaelic Football League over the weekend.

Raymond ConcarIrishmen Brian Flynn and Raymond Concar (pictured left) combined to provide the five-point winning margin over Souths on Sunday.

Flynn, from the Oran club in County Roscommon, Ireland, kicked his first scores for Shamrocks with 1 goal 1 point, while Concar scored 1 point from midfield.

While Concar has played many years with Brisbane's western suburbs Shamrocks, including winning the 1995 Queensland Championship, Flynn is in his first year with the green and gold.

County Roscommon's Brian FlynnFlynn (pictured left) has previously won the 1997 Intermediate county football championship with his club in Ireland, as well as the 1998 Senior county hurling championship.

Shamrocks beat Souths 1-10-13 to 0-8-8 with the best players including Stuart Meiklejohn, Matthew Ireland and Dave O'Malley.

Connor Walshe returned from the World Cup in Japan and Korea, was outstanding in goals.

In the ladies match, Shamrocks showed they could still be a title threat this season by beating one of the form team, Souths, by five points, 1-9-12 to 1-4-7.

Souths were winners of five of their last six games, their only blemish being a nail biting three-point defeat by the unbeaten Harps in the final of the Brisbane Shield last month.

Despite the result, Shamrocks remain in fourth place and Souths second.

Despite an early goal from Robbie White, Shamrocks missed the chance to stay ahead of Souths in the reserves mens competition ladder by losing 1-1-4 to 3-8-17.

Shamrocks ladies take on the top of the table

Emily Sangster reportsReport by 2002 ladies coach Emily Sangster

10 July 2002 - Shamrocks ladies played gallantly last weekend as they took on table leaders Harps.

A last minute addition gave the Shamrocks all the encouragement (and numbers) they needed to take on last years minor premiers.

Shamrocks paid for the absence of a goalie in the opening minutes with a quick goal to Harps, but with a quick re-shuffle it was quickly remedied.

Thanks to the skill of an active mid-field and half back line, combined with the determination of the scant full-back line Harps end score was minimised.

The half-forward combination of the Mowat sisters meant Shamrocks were kept from being scoreless.

Overall the team pulled together a game which displayed the skill equal to their peak of last season.

This has made it hard to name individual players who gave sensational efforts, except to say that every Shamrock who ran onto the field today was seen by coach, spectators and team mates a like to have played to a level not seen before.

Watch this space! The Shamrocks ladies are determined and on the rise!

It was one of the most watched games I have seen at the ground due Shamrocks only having eleven players (and only 10 on at a time) versus a full strength Harps team, and not coming off with the worst margin of the year.

Shamrocks still in second place

2nd July 2002 - Shamrocks remained in second place despite losing to the Queensland Gaelic Football League leaders at Willawong over the weekend.

Brisbane's western suburbs club were beaten by 13 points 1-3-6 to 4-7-19 by John Mitchels in the senior mens, with Scott Ingram leading the Shamrocks scoring with 1 goal 1 point.

John Mitchels move two games clear of Shamrocks at the top of the senior mens league ladder, with East Celts a further two games back in third.

The team in green then fought back valiantly to trail by just 2 points midway though the second half, before unluckily going down by that initial 8-point margin, 2-3-9 to 3-8-17.

Scott Ingram equalled the Shamrocks reserves team record with 2 goals.

Shamrocks lost three matches on the same day for the first time in almost 12 months, when the ladies team lost to John Mitchels for the first time in league play this year.
